Todd Donna Like the ideas and concepts except for at 5,000 dollars everyone gets access to live streams that should be for the supporting patrons first hand no offense to all the followers though it's just my two cents

March 27, 2014 21:20:57 · Reply

Chris Pirillo (@LockerGnome) Yeah, I was just spitballing - trying to figure out what people would want most. This seemed like a loose value to me, at best (in the sense that I think live access should be a prime perk).

Bob Santaniello I think that you're on the right track with refining goals but I think the goals should be more personable. I really think your patrons would appreciate something the long the lines of a patron only AMA or stream of some sort ( on occasion because we both know there is only so much time in the day). Patron exclusivity on certain things give us a sense of value in our patronage, like we are getting something back in return. Just like Todd below it's just my two cents. Keep up the great work my friend.

Chris Pirillo (@LockerGnome) A patron-only weekly thing, perhaps? Like an "after the show" broadcast? You might be on to something, here. Again, spitballing. At $5,000, I do an "after the show" patron-only broadcast once a week. At $10,000, I do it every weekday?

Heather Nielsen Like that idea.

Chris Miller I think if you would put a news style ticker on top of the screen or bottom and scroll with the patrons at any level during the entire broadcast would eliminate interruption of your topics and give you more overall time within the TLDR show. At the $10,000 mark I would make the advertisements optional or maybe within your ticker?? I would think that there has to be some kind of incentive for your patrons by wither making the broadcast private to start with at $5,000 or more personal options, such as, signature cards, newsletter, or hangout sessions at that level.

Chris Pirillo (@LockerGnome) Yeah, I won't be able to do anything fancy until I ramp up production and expand the team. I have to know my costs for that, though - and have identified willing participants to help make that happen. I'm trying to boost value, boost engagement, boost community, and not boost the amount of work I'm already tapped-out on presently. :)

Chris Miller Oh most definitely...I understand. Just giving you an quick idea to help you out now. Less you have to worry about. If you want I can do some research for you and come up with something for you and help out on my end. Thanks for your feedback. I am in a cost saving environment where I work at and I am in Quality Assurance. We run off a Toyota Production style system which we changed to benefit our facility and it saves $$$ and it can be modified to work in any kind of environment.

Edwin Wiersma I don't really mind what you do with it, as long as I am able to support you! I don't expect anything in return, the main reason why I became a patron is because when I watch your videos on my PC (which I don't regularly do), I have Adblock tuned on, so I think this is a nice way of supporting you. However, I think you could raise the bar a little further, I mean if you want to build a team around LockerGnome, you will need some serious cash.

Joseph Smiley Here's my answers to your questions. 1. No, I think you will start losing patrons mostly the $2.00 ones. 2. Yes, I don’t like most of the Ads on YouTube or TV. 3. Maybe? I would like to see my name but it will take away the value from the $25.00 - $100.00 patrons and may lower their pledges.

Corey Well to be honest with you Chris! I don’t agree with opening the live stream URL to all subscribers... The reason being, is the person who doesn’t value you like us valuable patrons do, are just gonna talk shit on the live stream, which is what the Patreon campaign prevents. Also, the people who do not want to donate for whatever reason will now have full access, making it less exclusive, YES! But i don’t even care about that, its the lack of support you will gain, because in their mind they will be thinking “Oh, I have all access to the live stream, I do not have to pay to see this, I don’t care about that after show, thats useless to me!” Finally along with your plans to gather more help, I have extended the offer, I do not need payment, your content is payment enough for me. Until you can gain a more stable foundation that isn’t even on my mind. Once again, I can’t help you with your website design, but I can help with operations assistance. I have done it plenty of times, at a high-end dealership, as well as at a law office, and a huge pet food distribution. I will discuss this with you in Seattle, honestly buddy; I’m here to help, anything you need let me know, It’s just who I am! Let me know if you need anything, you know my e-mail. :) my number is available there as well.

And that you Both Refer to each others Youtube channel. It would do you Both Good. Your goals are fine, it's just the audience that you need. I was watching your video's since 2008 (I think). And to be honest it Never bored me. I don't know why... You are just interesting and bring laughter to the "watchers at home! The only thing I can think about is a collab. And do it at least once a month. (PS) I cannot be your patron, Because I don't have the money, But I do Follow, subscribed, share & like Your Video's. Anything to help you out!

Christine Flynn My input is probably useless, but I am a patron because I enjoy watching your videos. In particular, I enjoy your reviews of software, movies etc. This is so, despite the fact that I don't own one single Apple product. Eventually, when I become gainfully employed, I will pledge more. I don't require or expect special treatment for pledging more. It's simply worth it to me to support something I enjoy. I don't mind the adds. I don't need my name mentioned etc. It's kind of like supporting PBS. Based upon all of this, I don't have any real suggestions for you.

Mario Fanous I reckon the 2 dollars should have something more because your younger supporters are $2 patreons who can't afford anything but not much extra because they are only up $2. $2 using PayPal is $2.4. Maybe every 6 months show our names or give a lucky 2 dollar patreon a go to meeting every 6 month. I reckon your doing fine it all up to you

March 27, 2014 22:50:37 · Reply

Chris Clark I'd agree with that. The live stream always happens at a time when I'm at work, so its not valuable to me. Plus, I generally watch videos by ChromeCasting them to my TV and it's easier to wait til TLDR is published publically and cast it to the TV before bedtime. I support Chris here because I missed TLDR every day and I love seeing his opinions on the news and on new products, but at the $2 level I don't get any value at all other than knowing I'm supporting someone I like and helping him to expand and move forward.

Rafael de Haan Okay, I saw some usefull feedbacks and you can use them. Two things... 1. Only make TLDR's for patrons. 2. The moment, really THE MOMENT you said "I need more patrons 'cause then I could hire personell to do them I thaught 'stupid to say that, now it wil stop your increment of patrons'. You know why? People LOVE your (your!) TLDR's but do they love it when somebody else is doin' them? I don't think so. Use/pay help to gather TLDR info, or let them help to edit the vids. And say that! I truly hope the # of patrons will increase again, no matter what. Good luck!

Michael Hyatt As far as growing LG site... Well there are a ton of gadgets and "geek things" that are trying to be made out there. What if you were to feature KS campaigns or others and sell them in your store. If you picked only winners, with our help, you would get the jump on ThinkGeek. Once a month, find 3 products that are trying to get funded, have us vote then if the gadget IS funded, sell it. Of course you would have to reach out to the product makers first.

Christopher The only one have I have trouble with is the giving of credit to all Patrons during TLDR. As myself being a supporter of a certain level, that was a reward to me personally. All the while its great to give credit where credit is due, but one of the perks to those of us in a certain tier that was a reward to us. Maybe I am seeming to sentimental of the subject matter, but everyone is entitled to a opinion.

GeekCast Media I became a patreon not just because of TLDR, but mainly because i wanted to support you, and how you run the community. A Few things i would suggest. 1) Allow Patreons to chat while in the background of TLDR like on IRC. 2) Try and accommodate UK Times as well, between 12 and 3pm your time is best. 3) Have a LIVE Patreon Geek Hangout Kind Regards, Eddie :) p.s. say hello to pixie for me!

March 28, 2014 00:48:02 · Reply

Chris Pirillo (@LockerGnome) I'm not going to get into chat again; it wound up being more of a headache than a help. Trying to do TLDR at different times, but it doesn't always work out well. The monthly Hangouts are aimed to be later in the evening on a weekend day.

Avelardo Lopez Well, for Patreon, I have multiple accounts, each for each one of my projects, some projects are combined. This way, my audience will have to option to support just one, or multiple projects of their choice. Advertising, I would not turn ads off until you are at $15K-$20K. Once you hit those points, consider just doing ads for top level Patreons. However, the TLDR video that goes public, should have adds for them to see, since they are part of a NON-Patreon audience. A private Patreon Showing/Channel with unlisted videos for them might be a good idea. It would not mean double video work. You can take the same video, just copy/paste/insert commercial clips (which is what I do via MS-PPT lilke methods) into the vids to get done faster. Have those saved as templates. An after the show concept sounds great. I would love to be able to see something like that.

Dave Cryer Hello Chris, This is a difficult area, as a fellow creator I am always looking at ways to add value. I would say that keeping at least one nice exclusive perk for Patrons helps you differentiate what you are doing here on Patron, to what is accessible to every subscriber on YouTube. Maybe tweak the perks & benefits, so that the wording conveys the message that you are trying to build a team. It is this team that will mean you can deliver more great content for everyone. Emphasise 'Team' and maybe give viewers more of a chance to get involved. Have an amazing weekend. Dave (geekanoids).

Adam Toms The way I see it as follows. Chris Pirillo provides on average 4.5 Hours of Vlogs a month and 10 Hours of TLDR/AMA and that’s before you get to reviews, unboxing, special videos etc. I donate about $5 a month. For 14.5 hours of entertainment that is phenomenal value. On the points Chris has raised based on the email he sent and the discussion on Patreon.com 1: On putting out the live links for all again I agree 100%. I imagine you’d gain a larger live audience which can offer up some great comments and interaction. I do feel though that an after show special for Patreon’s would be a good idea once a week. Also keep a few exclusives for Patreon’s. (e.g whats on my iphone, house tour etc) 2: Ads I have never had a problem with and I understand they are a part of the process. 3: If you make it $15,000 a month………then wow, there is a whole new level of potential. As budget grows and your team grows then more opportunities will come. Perhaps one day a LockerGnome interactive TV channels ;-) #whoknows 4: I agree with showing Patreons names at a certain level. 5: How about a series of video guides on how to Vlog for beginners? And will we see the return of Pirillo Picks perhaps? As always a huge thanks and love to Chris, Diana, Wicket, Pixie and Baby Pirillo for providing a great highlight of my day and I will happily continue to support you guys.

Chris Pirillo (@LockerGnome) The difficult part is that people think I pocket everything and do not account for costs, tax, time, etc. I have no simple way of accounting for that in this campaign.

Adam Toms I can certainly see how people would understand it that way. As far as I can understand it is essentially a small business. And from previous experience I can appreciate the difficulties of running a small business. I will happily continue to support and help in anyway I can. I recently discovered you and Diana from your Samsung Chromebook live unboxing (and you know I loves my Chromebooks) and went from being a casual follower to a huge fan over the last few months.

Emmanuel Acosta """""""""******I understand Chris worry. The problem is not just adding Patreon. Is to keep the current one. I will try to talk as Patreon. ******"""""""" Is was hard for me to take time to watch "live TLDR" so I was watching the offline version. After broadcast. So I started as $2 I was, cool live for $2. Then I wanted to ask question. I was, cool, I want to as CHRIS! So I upgrade to $5. Then I want to just support more so I upgrade to $10 But I felt like dropping supporting because I was not able to watch live TLDR because time issue. At the beginning I liked that I could ask question in everyday TLDR and Chris will comment on it, but then I was only for AMA ON FRIDAYS. So I said. ****If I am watching TLDR anyways, why would I pay?***** that to me is the issue. TLDR SHOULD BE $2 and TLDR live $5 and up. That will give you more value. <<<<<My goal idea if you want to keep me and more patreon and future one>>>> $0 TEASER OR JUST HALF OF THE VIDEO AFTER LIVE. $2 + TLDR REGULAR SUBSCRIPTION $5 + TLDR LIVE $10 TLDR LIVE FEED CHAT PRIORITY COMMENTS. MEANING DURING TLDR LIVE CHRIS WILL RESPOND 2-3 QUESTION OF THE DAY FROM PATRONS FRON THE LIVE FEED. CAUSE WHATS THE POINT REALLY? AND AFTER THE SHOW $25 + ALL OF THE ABOVE PLUS YOUR NAME ON "ALL THE TIME" LIKE THE FLASH NEWS SCROLLING ON THE BOTTOM. IM TELLING YOU, I WAS TRY TO SHOW MY FRIEND THAT I SUPPORT TLRD MY NAME WAS JUST MENTION FROM THE LIFE FEED BUT CANT FIND IT NO MORE. BUT I DONT HAVE MY NAME THERE. SO I WILL FOR $25 PLUS A CLEAR DEFINITION ABOUT THE FACEBOOK PAGE WHATEVER. NOT SURE WHAT THAT IS PLUS SAME FOR PRODUCT BUYING ADVICE FROM YOU $35 + ALL OF THE ABOVE PLUS MONTHLY GOOGLE PLUS VIDEO HANGOUT INVITES $50 + NOT CLEAR YET. $100+ FOR "$100 FROM MY POCKET AT MONTH". YOU GET 30% 40% DISCOUNT AT LOCKERGNOME SHOP STORE. THAT WILL BE COOL AND MORE PEOPLE WILL BE BUYING I GUESS. AND YOUR BUSINESS NAME. ADDING MORE FLEXIBILITY IS EQUALL MORE PEOPE MEANING SURE MONEY INPUT. That's my idea. Chris is you read this please comment. Some me your support and opinion.

You are very smart and funny as hell. So even if we have 500 patreon lets keep those 500 and have a good tldr even for 5 minutes. I will support you until i die. :) i hope all patreon see your value and tldr value. You are not full of s*** you are wise when talking but at the same time you cool. Keep it up. Anthony Dibble Something that was mentioned in yesterdays broadcast with Jerry made me think of a great idea for a value for the patrons. After doing the Geek Out, or any other time if you feel like that is better, do a patron only live stream on Twitch playing all those classic games you mentioned. Create a low profile user account and give the url to the patrons so we can follow it and get the notifications when you go live. Another idea I had is that if after a TLDR, if there is more content in the news you want to cover but ran out of time, you can have that be a patron only stream on ustream to go for however long you want it to go on for. Regardless if you do these or not, I will continue to be a patron if only for the value you have given to me since I found you on youtube many years ago. Thanks again Chris.

George Barrett I really like the after-show idea. I missed last weeks but that's something I'd definitely aim to tune in for. I also think the live links should be confined to patrons only, but I think you've decided on that already. At $15k, or maybe even before, you could decide to do TLDR with no time restriction. In other words, you could talk about all the news or questions you want to cover, without being cut off because you've hit 30 minutes. I'm not saying you should do an hours broadcast every day, just that if it's a slow news day you could do a shorter video, and on days with lots of news you could cover as much as you want. Have to say though, so far I'm really enjoying supporting what you're doing, and am hoping to increase my pledge :)

Chris Pirillo (@LockerGnome) Not a bad idea... I always wonder if that's a value (time spent on content)?

April 1, 2014 00:47:34 · Reply

George Barrett It's not so much the time spent on content, more just being able to address everything you would want to without having to roll news items to the next day because you've hit 30 minutes. Only because sometimes, yesterday's news is old news! Like I say it could work both ways, slower news days could mean, say, a 15 minute video.
