    • Indie Games
    • Music
    • Articles
    • Podcasts
    • Animations

  • Of course!

  • Are you working on a mobile app?

  • We most certainly are! Follow us on Twitter @Patreon for all of our product announcements!

    Privacy

  • Can I make my Patreon profile private?

  • Yes, absolutely. Visit the privacy section under your account settings to toggle profile visibility.

As a patron this will make your patronage private. Creators can also hide their pages (i.e. for works-in-progress). Just be sure you go public again before telling your fans!

    For Patrons

  • How do I update my Payment Information?

  • From the drop down menu on the top tool bar, select "Payments."

Add a new card/PayPal Select "How I pay" and you'll see the blue tab that reads "add new." From there you can add a new credit/debit card or PayPal address!

Retry card or transfer pledges to existing card/PayPal Select "How I pay" and click the edit icon to the right of your payment method. From there you can either retry card or transfer pledges to another payment method!

  • Do you store my credit card information?

  • No credit card information is stored on our server! We use Stripe.com, one of the most secure and reputable payment processors available. All card numbers are encrypted on disk with AES-256. Decryption keys are stored on separate machines. None of Stripe's internal servers and daemons are able to obtain plaintext card numbers; instead, they can just request that cards be sent to a service provider on a static whitelist. Stripe's infrastructure for storing, decrypting, and transmitting card numbers runs in separate hosting infrastructure, and doesn't share any credentials with Stripe's primary services (API, website, etc.) For more information you can visit Stripe's security policy right here!

  • Do you support international payments? Can I donate in any currency?

  • We accept Visa, MasterCard, America Express, JCB, Discover, Diners Club and PayPal!!

All pledges are converted to the USD! You will be charged the US dollar value of your pledge and any conversion fees associated with the transaction.

  • Why did my card/PayPal decline? Will you attempt to charge me again?

  • Unfortunately, we do not receive any information from credit card companies or PayPal as to why cards/Paypal accounts decline. If you update your payment information we will re-process your pledge within 48 hours. You will receive another email notifying you of a successful or declined charge. We will continue to charge all updated pledges every 48 hours for the remainder of the month!

  • Can I make a one-time tip/donation to a creator?

  • Unfortunately, Patreon is built for recurring payments to creators to provide ongoing support for the creator! BUT you can pledge to a Creator any amount and delete your pledge after the 1st of the month once you receive a verification email that your pledge was successfully charged! Just be sure to delete your pledge and you will not be charged moving forward!

  • What's the difference between "pending" and "completed" pledges?

  • Pending pledges appear in your outbound pledges when a Creator you're supporting makes a paid post. You won't be charged until the 1st of the month and you have the ability to edit/delete your pending pledges up until the 1st of the month before we begin to charge patrons.

Completed pledges are all pledges that have successfully been charged. This list is comprised of all posts that you have supported since becoming a patron!

  • I just pledged $100 (or more) and got charged immediately. Will I be charged again this month?

  • Woah! Thanks so much for your support :)

We implemented escrow for all pledges equal to or in excess of $100. You will NOT be charged again at the end of the month unless the Creator you're supporting creates an additional paid post. Once we begin processing pledges on the 1st of the month, we will transfer your credit to the Creator you're supporting and you will receive an email notification of your successful pledge! For all future months, you will be charged on the 1st of the month!

  • It's the 1st of the month. Why have I not been charged for my pledge?

  • It takes up to 72 hours for all charges to go through! You will receive an email notification indicating whether your pledge was successfully processed or declined. If your pledge was declined, be sure to update your payment settings !

  • How do I delete my credit/debit card or PayPal from Patreon?

  • Select "Payment Settings" from the drop down menu in the top toolbar. From there, select "How I Pay." You will see all credit/debit cards and PayPal information you have on file. If you click the edit icon to the right of your payment method you can then "delete card" or "delete PayPal."

  • How do I get a refund?

  • When you make a pledge, you are committing to support that Creator financially on the schedule specified by the Creator (per creation or per month). You may cancel an existing pledge at any time, which will suspend your financial support for that Creator going forward. However, refunds are NOT available for money that has already been transferred to a Creator for past creations or past months.

Please reach out to payments@patreon.com for any questions. Thanks

More information on privacy can be found in our Terms of Use

  • What does it cost to use Patreon?

  • Patreon is free to use. You decide how much or little you'll pledge to the creators you love!

  • Okay, but I've made a lot of pledges! How much moolah am I giving to support creators this month? Can I cap that amount?

  • You can view your pledges in your account settings by selecting the View Outbound Pledges button in the top right.

You can set a maximum monthly amount for your pledges. You can do this by logging in, going to the creator’s Patreon page, and clicking the blue “Edit Patronage” button.

If your pledges reach this cap you will not be charged for more patron-supported content from that creator for the rest of the month.

  • Is there a record of everything I've given to creators on Patreon?

  • Click the "View Outbound Pledges" button in your account settings, then hit "All Completed Pledges" to see a historical record of your transactions.

  • How do payments work?

  • Your card will always be charged and processed one time at the end of the month. You can edit or cancel your pledge at anytime before your card is charged. Patreon is a funding and patronage service based around goodwill, so you are never obligated to pay and can cancel anytime. Patreon accepts credit/debit cards and Paypal for payments.

When you've pledged your patronage per content release, you will see a pending pledge” in your account (This has not been charged to your card yet.) Once we process credit cards at the end of the month, your pending pledge will move from “Pending” to “Completed” pledges. This is when your card will be charged.

If you've pledged your patronage per month, you will automatically be charged at the end of each month.

  • What happens if I delete all my pending (outbound) pledges?

  • Patreon is based on the good-will of patrons in donating to creators. You can absolutely delete all your pending pledges, which will then remove your donation to the creator and any rewards associated with the pledges. Your patronage duration counter (on any ribbons you've collected for this creator) will also reset back to zero. You will still keep any ribbons you've earned!

  • How do I get in touch with the creator I am supporting?

  • If you are a patron of a creator, you will see a grey contact button to message the creator.

you can also try getting in touch via social media.

  • Can I start as a patron and become a creator later?

  • Every person that signs up begins as a patron. Any user that chooses to convert their profile to become a creator can do so in their account settings.

becoming a creator allows you to create awesome content for your fans. Creators still have the ability to become patrons for other creators.

  • What is GOOD?

  • GOOD is a form of recognition that we are currently in the Beta process of testing. We are constantly working on new ways to reward and recognize patrons, and GOOD is going to be built out to a full Reddit-esque Karma system. And it's not like golf...so the more the merrier!

  • Can I delete my account?

  • To permanently disable your account, email delete@patreon.com. Note that if you are concerned about your pledge charges, you can edit and/or delete all of them (while still showing that you have supported these artists on your profile) from your home page.

    For Creators

  • How does Patreon work?

  • Patrons can pledge any dollar amount they feel comfortable to any Creators on Patreon.

Creators will choose whether their Patrons are supporting them on a monthly basis or per creation.

Every pledge on Patreon is a recurring payment and Patrons will be charged at the beginning of every month for their previous month's support.

We are hoping to build a tighter and more engaged community between artists and creators with their most loyal fans.

  • What are the fees associated with using Patreon?

  • Patreon takes 5% and the creators cover the credit card transaction fees which are generally 4% across the site. Also remember that some pledges will fail due to declined credit cards. We're happy if a creator sees around $0.90 of every dollar!

There are also small fees for creators to receive a transfer of their funds depending on your payment receipt method!

    MORE DETAILS

Patrons and Creators can sign up for free. However, there are some transaction fees associated with using Patreon. We try to keep these minimal to maximize the support that Creators receive.

Patron pledge fees Our billing partners charge the following fees for pledges: Paypal $0.05 + 5%* per transaction Stripe $0.30 + 2.1%* per transaction Patreon also has a 5% fee to cover our operating costs*

All pledges are converted to USD. Any pledge made in an alternative currency will be converted to the equivalent value of the USD amount. All fees conversion fees will be charged to the Patron

*Note: We aggregate each Patron's pledges each month. If a Patron is supporting multiple creators, credit card fees will be split amongst all Creators being supported in an effort to minimize fees.

  • How do I receive automatic transfers / request my funds?

  • Automatic transfers will be sent on the 5th of every month!

To enable automatic transfers, head over to Payment Settings from the drop down menu in your top toolbar. From there, select "How I get paid." Under "How would you like to transfer funds?" be sure to select the automatic check box!

If you would like to request payment on your own, you can click "transfer funds" next to your preferred payment method at any time!

There are small fees associated with receiving your transfer of funds. See question above regarding Fees.

  • I have declined pledges. What do I do?

  • BASICALLY

Not all pledges will go through (cards decline, insufficient funds, etc) but we've already notified your patrons of their declined card and sent them info on how to update their payment info. If we retrieve the funds for you, we will drop them straight into your account balance!

    MORE DETAILS

At the start of each month, we attempt to charge your Patrons for pledges they made in the previous month. But sometimes pledges decline due to insufficient funds, your Patron's card expired, or the card was cancelled. We try to recover these pledges throughout the month, and if successful, we pay Creators the following month.

Patrons will sometimes request a refund, which we will sometimes grant. In these cases, the refunded amount is deducted from the next transfer of funds.

Any Patron with a declined card has already received an email from us instructing them how to update their payment information. We will continue to re-charge all pledges that have been updated every 48 hours. You should see more funds trickle into your account balance as we continue to re-charge updated pledges.

You can continue to check the status of your Patrons by clicking into your Patron Manger and selecting any paid post!

All recovered pledges will be included in next month's transfer of funds OR you can manually transfer funds at any time!

  • When/How will I get paid?

  • If you have selected "Automatic Payments" your funds will be transferred via your preferred payment method on the 5th of every month!

OR you can manually transfer your funds at any time by selecting "Transfer Funds" next to your preferred payment method under Payment Settings.

  • What's the difference between being supported "Monthly" vs. "Per Creation"? Which should I choose?

  • A Monthly campaing means your Patrons will automatically get charged on the first of every month. If you post one new creation, thirty new creations, or don't post a single new creation your Patrons will always be charged once at the beginning of each new month. This model is meant for creators that are posting more frequently than others. If you are guaranteed to post multiple new creations each month you should choose to be supported monthly!

A Per Creation campaign means you (the Creator) will be responsible for marking each post as either "free" or "paid." In order for your Patrons to be charged you will need to manually post a new paid creation. You can post as many paid creations as you'd like in one month but remember, your patrons will have the option to set a monthly max! This model is meant for creators that are posting less frequently. If you are worried about charging your patrons every month since you will not be posting on a consistent basis, you should choose to be supported per creation!

At anytime you can switch from being supported "Monthly" to "Per Creation" or vice versa. We recommend you let your patrons know prior to your switch so they can adjust their pledge accordingly! Pledges will remain the same value unless edited by the Patron themselves.

  • What does it mean if my patron has a "monthly max"?

  • BASICALLY

If you have chosen to be supported "per creation" we give all of your Patrons the option to set a monthly max so that they never go over their budget. A monthly max is simply a maximum amount a Patron can cap their pledge at. This protects Patrons from ever being charged more than they are willing to spend.

    MORE DETAILS

Here's how it works: You have a Patron that pledged $1 per creation with a monthly max at $2. That means if you post one paid creation one month your patron will be charged $1. If you post two new paid creations one month your patron will be charged $2. If you post three new paid creations one month your patron will not be charged for the third creation and will only be charged $2 due to their monthly max set at $2 and will still be able to view all creations.

Patrons will never be charged any amount exceeding their monthly max regardless of the amount of paid creations posted by a Creator.

**If you are worried about patrons capping their pledges and not being charged for all your paid creations, that means you're posting a lot! You might want to think about be on a monthly campaign!

  • How do refunds work?

  • We have a 100% refund policy where Patrons have the ability to request a refund at any time.

If a Creator has not requested a transfer of funds, the refund will be taken out of your current balance. If a Creator has already received their transfer of funds and then a Patron requests a refund, that amount will be subtracted out from the Creator's next transfer of funds.

  • It's the 1st of the month. Why do I have $0 processed by 0 patrons?

  • It takes 72 hours for all Patron pledges to be charged and appear in your account balance! You should start to see funds trickle into your account as your Patron's pledges are charged.

  • Why don’t I see any paid posts in my Patron Manger?

  • You must be on a per creation campaign not on a monthly campaign! You must be sure to mark creations as "Paid" before the 1st of every month!

If you'd like to be on a monthly campaign, go to "My Account" from the drop down arrow in your top tool bar and then click "Edit Creator Page." Scroll down and make sure that you have the check box marked for "Monthly campaign." Your Patrons will automatically be charged once every month if on a monthly campaign.

  • Uploading Creations to Patreon is easy and allows maximum flexibility for a creator. Creators can release both free content and paid content on Patreon. Free posts do not charge patrons. Paid posts tell our system to charge your patrons. Start all creation posts with the orange plus button in the top right corner. If your content is hosted on another platform (such as Youtube, Tumblr, Soundcloud, etc) simply place the link in the URL section. You can also set the privacy of a post. If the post is of a final creation of yours (meaning the final product), be sure to mark as PAID (so that you get paid for it), PUBLIC (so that fans browsing can view your work while browsing and potentially become a patron.) If you are posting a casual hello to your patrons, head over to your activity feed. This posting is done in-line now as you will see where to add text or an image right on the top of your activity feed. If you are accepting pledges on a per month basis, please continue to post CREATIONS. You will not need to mark them as PAID because our system automatically bills your patrons once a month.”

  • Is my adult/erotic content allowed on Patreon?

  • What is allowed?

Patreon is open to all types of art! Because sexuality is a common theme in many great works of art, Patreon does not ban work featuring nudity or other sexual content.  However, we also want Patreon to be safe and browseable for children and young adults, so please use discretion and common sense: if your artwork could potentially make someone uncomfortable (with violent or sexual themes), please make your posts “patron only,” so that only your supporters are able to see your work, and please do not use explicit language in the title, url, or public description of your Patreon page.  Please also mark your page as “private” in the settings menu so that only users with the url can view it.  Unfortunately, patrons of creators who make NSFW art will not be able to use Paypal as a payment method.

    What is not allowed?

Pornography is not allowed on Patreon. “Pornography” is defined as material designed with the sole intention of eliciting sexual arousal. Specifically, Patreon does not allow:

-Close up depictions of intercourse, masturbation, or genitalia

    -Depictions of sexual bodily fluids

-Any sexual content depicting underage subjects

-Anything we forgot to put on this list but makes our users uncomfortable

Please, use common sense!  We don’t want to remove your account, but we also can’t ignore feedback from our users.  If we get multiple complaints about your account, we will contact you once with a friendly reminder to make your posts patron only, set your page to private, and remove explicit language from your page.  After that friendly reminder, if we hear from our users again, we reserve the right to turn into the Incredible Hulk and remove your account.

You must be at least 18+ years of age to view any adult content or we reserve the right to terminate your account.
