How I Write

If NCAA rules are the "inside baseball" of college sports, my talking about how I write is inside of even that baseball. But plenty of writers follow me and they might be interested in how I write. Most of my writing is done in Markdown and on an iPad. If you have not checked it out, Markdown is a great way to stop using Word if you ultimately work with a content management system and are not emailing files to an editor. Markdown is an easy-to-learn and easy-to-read subset of HTML formatting. You can quickly make headings, bold text, italic text, and links. Variants like MultiMarkdown do more elaborate things like footnotes and metadata. You can write Markdown in just about any text editor or word processor but a dedicated app is best. A good Markdown app lets you preview how your writing will look, helps you with syntax highlighting and autocomplete, and generates good HTML for posting. My personal favorite is Editorial, which is part Markdown editor, part programming environment. You can do some amazing things with Editorial including posting straight to Wordpress. If you want to try a simpler editor, Byword is a great alternative. I save article ideas in OmniFocus, which is a very powerful task management program for iOS and Mac. Finally I use Drafts, a notetaking app that lets you fling text around to different apps and Clips, a clipboard manager with a slick custom keyboard, to move all this around. So to write something like the daily Squad List, I will go into OmniFocus, find all the saved links, and add them to Clips. I then go into Editorial and use Clips' custom keyboard to load those links in Editorial's browser. I use Editorial workflows to quickly add links and eventually to post to 30-Mile Radius which is on Wordpress. Finally, I use Drafts to tweet out the link to both Twitter accounts simultaneously. I hope someone, anyone, found that interesting.
