is creating New Play Development

The 50 Playwrights Project is creating a space for new Latinx play development.

Since our launch in February 2016, 50 Playwrights Project (50PP) has advocated for the work of Latinx playwrights from across the nation. We have interviewed over 80 Latinx playwrights and published an annual list of our recommended Latinx plays. On November 6, 2017, we produced a free reading of Karen Zacarías’ Just Like Us with Rogue Productions at Stages Repertory Theatre in Houston that doubled as a fundraiser for DACA Defense Efforts and Hurricane Harvey First Responders. Our staged reading was recognized by the Houston Chronicle as one of the city’s top theatre events of 2017. In a relatively short time, 50PP has garnered national attention and helped amplify the work of Latinx playwrights across the country.

We are thrilled to announce that we are doubling down on our commitment to Latinx playwrights by entering the world of new play development. We began this work in spring 2018 with workshops of Jasminne Mendez’s City Without Altar and Emilio Rodriguez’s Angel of the People Mover. Both of these workshops were a huge success and all artists involved were paid for their work.

We are using Patreon to build a monthly individual donor base that can support monthly development opportunities (table readings, workshops, and staged readings) of new Latinx plays.

Rather than a monetary goal, we are committed to building a network of 50PP supporters from across the nation who are eager to see more development opportunities for Latinx theatremakers. Therefore, our goal is to attain 50 monthly donors at any price level. Your monthly contribution will help us pay artists for their work.

For your monthly contribution, your name will be included on our website and all printed materials as a core supporter of 50PP.
