Richard Warfield Jr Great idea, will try to join regardless of what time it is. Perhaps a straw poll or something and for a given week people can chime in on what works best. If I can be greedy, after 9pm ET

Headphones

Dan Benjamin talks about his favorite headphones for podcasting and audio editing, explaining why he likes them, and why they are the best value for the money.

He also talks about why monitoring yourself while you record is so important!

Jason DeFillippo I got the velour covers for my 7506's and they're delightful.

Marc Johanssen Broadcast industry standard: yes. Excellent value (in its price range): yes. Adequate for tracking/recording & editing: yes. Optimal for Mixing/Mastering: no. Recording engineers will normally mix using special monitors (speakers) in rooms that have been 'treated.’ Unfortunately, most podcasters do not have this optimal critical listening environment at their disposal. This is why choosing the best headphones for the task at hand can really make a difference. While super comfy and portable, the Sony MDR-7506 headphones, as one reviewer put it "are optimized to let you hear what's wrong, not what's right about recordings." The midrange is clearly emphasized with these headphones - this is why they are great for cameramen, and to reveal unwanted sounds on the set (like someone nearby chewing gum, etc.) or lip-smacking, breathing, etc., in your recordings. For your critical mixing duties (and at twice the price of the 7506 headphones, I might add) I highly recommend the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro (250 ohm version.) NOTE: Guitar Center seems to only stock the 80 ohm version - it is slightly less accurate, has a bit more low end (for the kids?) and will be louder (vs. the 250 ohm version) if plugged into your smartphone, iPod, etc. If the headphone jack you will be plugging the DT 770 Pro's into has a robust output (like those found on the Universal Audio Apollo and most respectable audio interfaces) then you will want the 250 ohm version. While I do own both the Sony MDR-7506 (so I can hear what everyone else is listening to) and the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 250 ohm headphones (for mixing), when it comes to tracking/recording, instead of reaching for the Sony's, I prefer to use the now discontinued (but still available) M-Audio Studiophile Q40 headphones. They can be found "new-in-the-box" on Amazon for as low as $80.00 (they’ve been around since late 2007 and used to sell for around $150.00) The Q40's midrange is flatter-sounding and smoother than the Sony's somewhat brash mids, while also having a few dB of bass boost that will keep you on the straight-and-narrow when recording. Can’t afford all of them right now? Having trouble deciding on which headphone(s) to purchase? Here’s some practical advice - Whatever headphone you choose to use, do yourself (and your audience) a favor and listen to your final mix (meaning, after you have converted the episode to an MP3 file) in the car, with your earbuds, on your home stereo, etc. This will give you a ‘real-world’ glimpse into how your mix “translates" when reproduced through various playback methods. Then go back and make adjustments, as needed. Soon you will learn what needs to be done to create balanced mix of your podcast audio. That's the whole point of having accurate-sounding headphones - to create a final mix that sounds great wherever it is played.

Jochen Awesome! :-D I am waiting eagerly for the next episodes of DBH, Cash's Corner, The Pipeline, The Frequency and Podcast Method. Hope you get well soon! My commute is not the same without you!
