Hi, my name is Yang. And this is Accented Cinema.

Accented Cinema is a YouTube biweekly video essay series that spotlights films outside of Hollywood. I'd like to go on a journey with you around the world, and dive deep into the culture and philosophy behind each and every foreign film.

My name is Yang. I'm a Chinese-Canadian filmmaker.
I was born and raised in the province of Guangdong. I moved to Montreal when I was 14, and graduated from film school there.

Film is what I do. I make them, I watch them, and I talk about them.
Where I was born, films were diverse, made by filmmakers from Hong Kong, Japan and many other countries. They defined my childhood.

Studying film in the west made me realize that my experience is a unique one among filmmakers. That the film I watched is far from the mainstream among the film academics. That bums me out.

Film is an excellent medium to see into a culture's identity and philosophy. Not to mention their inherent aesthetic value. There are great deal of people who would like to know more about the world.
I can be your guide.

If you are coming to this page, I assume you'd like to further support this channel. Thank you!
As a token of my appreciation, there are some extra content I'll be providing to the patrons of this channel. Take a look around this page and choose what you'd like!

Currently, majority of my channel's revenue comes from YouTube advertisements. That is simply too unreliable to keep this channel afloat. Video essay necessitates the use of film footage, which opens the channel to copyright claims and demonetization. That makes thing unsustainable, as each video takes 40 to 60 hours of work to produce.

I'm proud of our channel. It's one of the few channels on YouTube that talks about foreign films. Let's keep it going!
