About

Adélie Linux is a small, independent Linux distribution that is focused on delivering a high quality operating environment. We have many defining focuses that set us apart from most mainstream Linux distributions:

Minimal Hardware Requirements
We believe that all people, in all walks of life, at any economic level, deserve the very best that their technology can offer them. We combine the power of the musl libc, kernel tweaking, and our decades of programming experience to create an environment where the latest KDE Plasma 5 works in just 384 MB RAM or less.

Simple Installation
We are writing Project Horizon, an installation system for Adélie Linux based on years of experience with other distributions.  Simple, fast, correct: choose all three!

Truly Libre Software
We only package software that meets our strict Libre Software guidelines. All of our packages are open source and Free Software, and can be freely audited, modified, or remixed at any time.

Working Towards Standard Compliance
We are working side-by-side with kernel engineers and the musl libc project to bring up an environment that conforms to global operating system standards.

Accomplishments
Over the past three years of our existence, we've made many strides towards our mission of a high quality operating environment. From our humble beginnings as a Gentoo overlay, to our current growing community of independent Linux hackers, we've made contributions to:

  • musl libc, including many fixes for POSIX® conformance;
  • Mozilla, bootstrapping a 64-bit PowerPC port and improving Python 3 support in their build system;
  • KDE, including many correctness fixes;
  • …and over 35 other upstream projects!

We now ship over 2,000 individual software packages, and are regularly among the Top Freshest Repositories on Repology.  We work hard to ship the latest possible stable version of all software that we package. Our average review time for merge requests is just 26 hours.

Future Goals
A few of the things we want to do, that your contributions will enable us to accomplish:

  • Write a PowerPC JIT for Firefox Quantum.
  • Ports of GNOME 3 and Cinnamon desktop environments.
  • Determine feasibility of running Steam on musl using gcompat on 32-bit x86.
  • Port to SPARC64, 32-bit ARM, and m68k, among others.
