Welcome! Thank you for checking out Aletheia.

In short, Aletheia is software for getting science published and into the hands of everyone, for free. It's a decentralised and distributed database used as a publishing platform for scientific research.
So, Aletheia is software. But software without people is nothing. To comprehensively answer the question what is Aletheia, Aletheia is software surrounded by a community of people who want to change the world through open access to scientific knowledge.

For a more in depth explanation, Aletheia is an Ethereum Blockchain application utilising IPFS for decentralised storage that anyone can upload documents to, download documents from, that also handles the academic peer review process. The application runs on individual PCs, all forming part of the IPFS database. This gives us an open source platform that cannot be bought out by the large publishers (and any derivatives of the platform source code must also be open source) that should also be hard to take down due to database nodes being spread across the globe in multiple legal jurisdictions. Aletheia is designed to be a resilient platform run transparently by the community, not some black box corporation or editorial board, meaning all users can see the decisions Aletheia is making and have a stake in that decision making process if they so desire. By this nature, Aletheia is decentralised, it has no key person risk. Should the core group who invented Aletheia disappear Aletheia won't cease to exist, it will continue to be run by the community. The community moderates content through various mechanisms (peer review, reputation scores etc.,) to ensure quality of content.

In keeping with our notions of openness and transparency we have designed our rewards with those principles in mind. We aren't fans of paywalls, so we have not opted to go the common route of making exclusive blog posts and videos. The idea is, if you unlock a tier by paying for it, you've unlocked it for everyone, as practical as that is for the given tier. Really this is great though, as with your financial contribution you will be supporting the development of decentralised open source software, you will be supporting yourself in receiving something, and you'll be supporting the entire community around Aletheia. At the end of the day helping people is what we're all about. The rule of common sense applies here as well, if you unlock a tier and pull support, no hard feelings, the volunteer community will need to make a call on if it's still feasible for that tier to be fulfilled given Aletheia commitments along with study/work/everything else our incredible volunteers juggle in their day to day lives.

Our current prototype:

Tiers
Backers of decentralised academic publishing
$1 or more per month 1 patron
People changing the world by supporting a movement that radically alters academic publishing receive eternal gratitude. No small thing, let me assure you. Plus, we will even throw in an invite to our Slack channel. The latter you can get by just emailing [email protected], this is just a reminder!
Twice the backers of decentralised academic publishing
$2 or more per month 0 patrons
Your support just doubled, simply by contributing an extra dollar. That's value for money. You will receive twice the eternal gratitude. No small thing x2.
Named supporters of decentralised academic publishing
$10 or more per month 0 patrons
You will be named on our website as a supporter of Aletheia for all time. We haven't added the financial backer section to the website yet, but we will, and you will be named on it. Meet this tier and email the name you would like to add to [email protected] We have a code of conduct, names have to adhere to it so nothing rude or mean.
Immortalised supporters of decentralised academic publishing
$20 or more per month 0 patrons
You will be named in our source code as a supporter of Aletheia for all time. Meet this tier and email the name you would like to add to [email protected] We have a code of conduct, names have to adhere to it so nothing rude or mean. Oh, and the names will be comments in the code, not read code itself, so none of that bobby droptables stuff.
Socialised supporters of decentralised academic publishing
$100 or more per month 0 patrons
You will be personally invited to our ongoing community calls. They are sporadic and can be at odd times since we are a scattered group of volunteers across the world. However we'll do our level best to ensure the call is at a time that works for you to recognise your contribution.
Stickered supporters of decentralised academic publishing
$150 or more per month 0 patrons
You will be sent stickers of the Aletheia logo. Expensive stickers to be sure, but it's for a good cause. And you can bet they will be exclusive! Show off your Open Access pride with a sticker pack for you and those you choose.
Videos for the supporters of decentralised academic publishing
$200 or more per month 0 patrons
We'll create regular videos where people can write in and we can answer curated questions. As the person who unlocks this tier for others, you will have a shout out and we'll answer a specific question from you, with the aforementioned caveats of complying with the code of conduct.
Science for decentralised academic publishing
$300 or more per month 0 patrons
A bit of an exclusive tier, if you're a researcher publishing through Aletheia, we will boost your research through our social media channels for a week. We might do this anyway, but again, it's for a good cause. Researchers might be a bit cash strapped, so an institution looking to boost the reach of their staff are welcome to participate.
More science for decentralised academic publishing
$500 or more per month 0 patrons
Everything we ran through in the previous tier holds here, except we will boost your research for a solid month.
Creators of decentralised academic publishing
$1,000 or more per month 0 patrons
We will work with you to workshop a feature, something that will support the ideals of Aletheia and further the betterment of academic publishing. We will then prioritise the feature in our development roadmap. You will have made a tangible impact to the open access ecosystem.
Goals
$0 of $500 per month
On reaching $500 a month I'll start a video blog regarding Aletheia
