Hey there! Thank you for stopping by.

I am Alexia, a writer and illustrator, and I create bilingual children's books. I both write and illustrate them and ask native speakers to do the translations for me.

Here is how it all started:

Me and Nikos, my partner in crime, came to the Netherlands from Greece in order to do a master's degree. We did that and then we did a couple more things, like getting married and having a baby. A Greek baby in the Netherlands. And the research freak that I am, I started looking for great educational material for bilingual children the moment I found out I was pregnant.

Guess what. There isn't much out there! Especially when it comes to strange language combinations, like Greek and Dutch or Finnish and Greek (hi Marja-Ilona and Dimitris!). I joined bilingual education groups and started asking people what it was they were missing.

Many parents had to buy the same book in two or even three different languages, in order to help their kids strengthen their language skills. I wondered why not put both languages in one book and save some space?

And that's how my first book, Lou, was born. Well, it was born because of that need and my personal need to prove to myself that I could still be creative and productive after becoming a mom.

You can read more about Lou here. But here is the short version: I believe that kids are small humans. They have brains and they have aesthetics. And their aesthetics is influenced by what they see and what they are exposed too. Therefore it is important to expose them to high-quality material both in terms of language and in visual terms. There are some amazing children's books out there that do that, but unfortunately they are not bilingual. And the ones that are are not translated in the languages that interest me (and thousands of other parents).

It seems that many other parents agree with me, for the first "Lou" book was a great success, considering it was self-published and printed locally. And this is how I want to keep things. Hand-made, local and ethical.

What do you pay for?

Printing Costs
It doesn't make sense to print a children's book in a third-world country or a country full of sweatshops, where it will be kids printing books for kids. But printing locally means a higher cost. A cost that I am more than willing to pay, to support local businesses. Additionally, I would like to print on recycled paper, when possible, 'cause our children need a planet to live on as well, when they grow up.

Translation Costs
My first translators have been kind enough to accept a very low payment, in order to make this project possible. They knew I had zero budget. But with your support I will hopefully be able to offer a fair compensation to these talented people.

Update: After I shared this patreon page so many people showed interest for so many languages! And that is great. I promise you that if I can afford to pay the translators a decent fee, I will have the books translated in any language you want. So help me out, will you :) ?

Shipping Costs
I want to be able to make this material accessible to as many children as possible. For some locations the shipping cost is actually bigger than the cost of the book. By funding shipping for families that can not afford this extra cost, you are helping kids gain access to quality material that will help their education on many levels.

Marketing Material Costs
In order to get the word out there I need to participate in different events, like local markets and library readings as well as print and distribute information leaflets at schools and libraries.

What do you get back?

Awesome bilingual books, flashcards and illustrations of different sizes, that will help promote your child's love for reading, propel their imagination and help them feel comfortable with the languages of your choice.

Since I shared my patreon page many of you started asking what language combinations are already available for the first and second book I made, "Lou, the sparrow" and "Lou's adventures". I would love to print more copies for you! This is what this milestone is about.
