About Amy Douglas - Storyteller

Hello! And Welcome!

I am a storyteller, host of 'Taking the Tradition On' podcasts and storytelling talk-show and BLAST! performance storytelling club.

On this page you will find exclusive videos of stories, early access to podcasts, updates on what I'm doing, riddles, musings and occasional bad jokes. It's a place where I welcome questions about my work and what I do. - and where you can suggest topics for podcasts and people you would like to hear interviewed.  But most of all you will be supporting me to have the time to put together Taking The Tradition On podcasts and storytellers in conversation for everyone - thank you!

I love stories. They make the world a better place.  We need them now more than ever.
Stories are as old as humanity.  They are the way we share our hopes and fears, pass on knowledge and wisdom and the best way I know to understand each other.
Traditional storytelling is full of wit, wonder, magic.  They make us laugh, cry, help us cope with the cruelty of fate and remind us that there is still beauty and hope in the world.

I create physical and online spaces for storytelling to happen.
I run monthly performance storytelling club, BLAST! Beautiful Lies and Startling Truths, which is now online.  I make podcasts and host a storytelling talk-show, Taking The Tradition On.  I run BLAST! and Taking The Tradition On because I love doing it.  I love hosting a space to hear storytellers from around the world and interviewing storytellers about what inspires them, how they work on their craft and what place storytelling has in the world today

I was exceptionally lucky to apprentice with Duncan Williamson, a Scottish Traveller storyteller and ballad singer.  Thanks to Arts Council England, I've been able to spend much of the last year digitising the reel to reel tapes he gave me and sharing my journey online through podcasts, my blog and performances.  When lockdown arrived and I couldn't interview people in person, I started a storytelling talk-show on zoom, discussing Duncan and why he was important with storytellers, archivists, folklorists and festival organisers.  My ACE project has finished, but I would love to carry on.  So, this is my appeal to you - to have enough time to continue podcasting, hosting Taking the Tradition On, blogging and hosting BLAST!, I need a little bit of help.  If you enjoy what I do and you are in a position to help fund me to have the time to do it, I will be very grateful!  Most of the things I want you to fund will be available free to everyone.  The exception is BLAST! - where everyone has to buy a ticket - but the ticket money goes to pay the storytellers, not to me for the time organising it.  What you will get from this page is early access to some of the material I put out, exclusive videos of stories and a lovely warm fuzzy feeling from having done a very lovely thing!
