Ana María Perea is creating stories!

Hi, I'm Ana María, and I write things. Things like queer-friendly and racially diverse fantasy, science fiction, comic book scripts, horror, and more. I'm starting this Patreon up as a complete unknown, which means right now I'm working on creating a broad enough body of free work to give you an idea of what you'd be supporting. There will be links here when that happens.

Since I'm only getting started, I'm asking for per-story pledges, and I'll be posting 1-4 short stories every month. Those stories will remain Patreon-exclusive for a year after publication, so you'll get the chance to tell all your friends you read that story that won the Hugo or the Bram Stoker award or whatever a full year before anyone else. Assuming I ever win one of those. (Hey, I can dream...)

Patreon earnings will go towards:
  1. Better health insurance. I've got a few health problems that aren't being adequately treated because even the most comprehensive coverage from my former job isn't sufficient to cover them. I'd very much like to fix that.
  2. More consistent health/dental care. Because what good is having health insurance if I still can't afford to pay for doctor visits/medication/replacement equipment/dental work?
  3. A financial buffer so I can devote more time to writing. The fewer hours I'm putting into a day job, the more I can write.
  4. Stuff to maintain my online presence. Website art, hosting, a HootSuite subscription, all that stuff that goes into making sure people on the internet know who I am and where to find my work.
  5. The services of some good sensitivity readers. Being a member of multiple marginalized groups doesn't mean I have encyclopedic knowledge of every other marginalized group ever. If I'm going to write outside my experience, I want to make sure I'm getting it right, and not making the kind of mistake that makes people I like and respect throw my book across the room. And while, "Hey, my cool science-fictiony idea runs on this concept; is this going to make me look like an idiot to anyone who passed Intro to Physics?" is the sort of thing I'd be fine asking as a favor, "Hey, read my entire novel to make sure it doesn't trigger you and tell me in detail about it if it did!" is not. Sensitivity readers need to be paid.
  6. Shiny writing stuff. This is at the bottom of the priority list for a reason: I can still keep banging on my keyboard and making words happen without buying an iMac or the latest versions of software like Scrivener and Aeon Timeline, but that stuff sure does make it easier. (Things like ergonomic keyboards and equipment, though, count more as health care items. If not having it causes me to lose feeling in part of my body when writing, whether fingers or feet, it goes under health care.)
Want to be updated when I do new stuff, but not sold on paying for all my stories? Go to my website, where you can sign up for my mailing list. It's not spammy, but will give you biweekly updates on what I'm working on, and occasional bonus content.
Tiers
Dear Readers
$1 or more per creation
At $1 per story, you'll get access to all the stories I publish here, including mobi/epub/pdf downloads of each story for your e-reading pleasure. All stories will remain Patreon-only for at least a year after I post them.
Engaged Audience
$3 or more per creation
As above, plus access to a monthly Google hangout where I'll answer up to three of your (non-spoilery) questions, and probably randomly geek out over whatever I'm researching this month. If you ask a spoilery question, you get one bonus question to do with as you will, but those don't stack. Ask three spoilery questions, and you still get only four questions total. I'll be recording the hangout session and posting it for later viewing, so if you can't make it, you can still submit your questions to me beforehand and have them answered.
World Explorers
$5 or more per creation
All of the above, plus once a month you'll have access to a completely random bit of worldbuilding from one of my long-form projects. No spoilers, just the stuff that's there in the background the whole time. How exactly does the magic work? What's the history of the City That Isn't? What's the story behind a random obscure reference added for flavor? If, by some miracle, you decide you want to write fanfic about the worlds I've come up with, this is the tier you want.
Spoiler Squad
$10 or more per creation
As above, plus you'll get bimonthly spoilers for one of my long-form pieces of writing. They won't give away the entire plot, but they'll be things like (to use The Empire Strikes Back as an example), "So, Luke's dad? Not as dead as you think he is. Not even a little."

As they're works in progress, if at any point the spoiler becomes not a spoiler anymore (if, say, as I'm writing that scene I plotted I decide that Luke's dad is dead after all, because HE WAS OBI-WAN THE WHOLE TIME), I'll post corrections and give you a whole new spoiler. The spoiler equilibrium must be maintained!

All spoilers will be clearly marked and hidden from casual viewing so if you want one of the higher tiers and don't want to be spoiled, the only thing that will betray you is your own willpower, or lack thereof.

Co-Conspirators
$50 or more per creation only 10 left
As above, plus once a month you get an email talking about the development of whatever parts of my fictional worlds you're most interested in, and I'll bounce ideas off you and you can share feedback. I can't promise to act on that feedback, and you definitely get no royalties from any changes you suggest, but I'll give you serious consideration and a personalized response. You may, once in a blue moon, get responses such as, "Okay, that idea really wouldn't work for the story you want it in, but I'd love to use that in another story, for which I'll give you credit on my website." (If you're not comfortable with me using your feedback and only giving you a written credit, please don't send it to me. Write the fic you wish to see in the world.)

...Yeah, I know. I live in hope.

Here's how this is going to work, if you want to hand me between $100 and $400 a month for my Patreon output: I will write you a story every other month. You have to have been a member of this tier for two months before I write for you, and after that, you get a bimonthly story that's written based on criteria you select.

I reserve the right to refuse any story request, though I'll do all I can to work with you. Stories will be posted on my website, and I retain all rights to them, though you will get a dedication mentioning what you wanted, along the lines of, "This is for Julia Burnsides, who wanted lesbian selkies having a knife fight."

I will not write porn without a plot... not because I find it objectionable (go forth and write my characters banging each other as much as you like, by all means), but because that's not what I'm doing with these stories. Although my writing can go to some profoundly dark places, I will not write rape, incest, necrophilia, bestiality, etc. by request. If the contents of a story would qualify as hate speech, I won't write that, either. I won't write sex or romance between existing characters that aren't romantically interested in each other as I've written them -- again, that's what fanfic is for. I will not contradict my own canon.

Things I will write: new characters with a similar dynamic to the ones you're interested in falling in love (or just into bed, though again, I top out at R-rated for the purposes of commission-fic) while a plot also happens, mentions of consensual kink, sequels/prequels to stories I've already written, specific characters interacting, characters doing specific things.

For example, you could request a story where Saira and Jasper fight space pirates, and I'd write that. You could not request a story in which Saira and Jasper fight space pirates and one of them is Saira's father and then there's rape but it gets better because of Jasper's amazing sexual healing powers. (Ew. Ew. EW.) You could request a story where some non-Saira person encounters their abusive father while fighting space pirates and they have to confront some painful (but non-explicit) memories, though. I love writing that kind of thing.

Basically, a good rule of thumb is that you can be very specific about plot, or very specific about characters, but not both. Give me room to work, and don't ask me to screw my own characters over.

While I'm dreaming...

All of the above, including your bimonthly posted story above, but you also get, once a month, a private story that's just for you.It won't go up on Patreon -- in fact, no one else will see it unless you want them to. If you'd like to give me the option to have it published you can, but if you want me to delete it from my hard drive and online backups and let yours be the only copy that exists in the universe, I'd be cool with that, too.

Not only will I write you this story and send you a digital copy, but I'll also mail you a physical chapbook, made and signed by me, suitable for putting on your shelves, clutching to your chest while rocking back and forth in the corner, taunting your friends with, whatever.

The two-month waiting period does not apply here -- you still have to wait two months for your public stories, but I'll start on the private one as soon as your first payment is successfully processed.

I will not break any of my above rules, except for the one about porn without plot. At this level of patronage, I'll write you all the smut you want, so long as the characters at least have the potential to be interested in each other.

Goals
$1 of $500 per creation
If I reach $500 a month (health insurance!), I'll post one completely free story every month, and my patrons will get to vote on the subject matter.
