Hear Me Out.

For years, I’ve been working with artists and the youth in this city for free (or very cheap). And I’ve done a lot of good so far – teaching classes, helping artists grow and discover themselves, putting out my own work to inspire thought and change – but I want to do more. I need to expand the work.

I’ll say it again: I want to do more for this city and the people in it. I need to be able to support myself, to make this real, for our world-class city.

Why Patreon?

Things cost money, as we all know, so my ability to drive out and support, or teach, or perform is complicated by the bills that keep stacking up. And I’m a filthy socialist, at-heart, so I give without asking back.

To put it as short as I can: the more financial independence I have, the more I’ll be able to afford to put on shows that feature and reach out to the youth (and adults, who are equally looking for a way to express themselves, and are so often overlooked by the arts community these days). And the more I’ll be able to help this city to not just grow our sports teams, arenas and parking fees, but also grow its beautiful arts scene.

Here’s a Top 10 of the highlights of my work
(and why you should support the cause):

  • 1. Featured Poet on Button Poetry, performed in the National Poetry Slam.
  • 2. Speaker and Presenter at the 2018 California Democratic Convention
  • 3. Funded by the City of Sacramento to mentor youth poets and teach them the business side of spoken word.
  • 4. 6+ years of speaking at public events about Asexuality, Suicide, Mental Health Awareness, and the struggles of being a Cuban-American.
  • 5. Went overseas to represent Sacramento, and work with 100 Thousand Poets for Change - with poets from 36 countries.
  • 6. Brought back Sacramento’s representation in the National Poetry Slam (it’d been 8 years since we had a team) in 2015.
  • 7. I have almost 10 years of experience as an improv performer.
  • 8. I am working alongside the Crocker Art Museum to spread art to the youth, with ZFG (Zero Forbidden Goals, an arts and activism group).
  • 9. Have worked with 30+ local schools and teaching organizations to teach the arts as well as positive, healthy expression to the youth.
  • 10. Worked alongside The Wailing Wailers’ (IE: Bob Marley & The Wailers) Dr. Devon I. Evans, Paul WillisJoe Kye, Spacewalker, Stephen Sparling and local artists.
  • 11 (Bonus!). Has led and performed in more than 3 successful West Coast and Internationally-oriented spoken word tours of his work.
This has all been done with no financial support (except for numbers 3 and 11, which had its airfare and living arrangements half-covered by a Kickstarter campaign I created, and half-covered by myself).

In fact, often, I’ve paid out-of-pocket to make these real. In the interest of expanding my work, and growing it, and make it more of a reality in Sacramento – a self-described “world-class city” that only focuses on sports and bringing in artists from other cities.

Why do I do it?

This city has so much talent and potential waiting to be expressed and shown, and I know my purpose is to help it grow.

When you give, you aren’t just giving to a guy who’s putting the cash in his pocket – I work hard for this city, and have been working hard for this city.
But now I need your help. $1 a month, spread across a lot of people, makes a world of a difference, in terms of what I can do.

What do you get out of it?

All I can afford to give. Real, down-to-earth inspirational messages, poems, behind-the-scenes videos, videos and interviews, and free access to shows are just some of the things I am offering.

You also get the satisfaction of helping the art scene in a growing city get even bigger.

So, thank you, even if all you do is share this page.

Thank you so much for your faith and love for the hard work that myself and other artists have been putting into all of this.

For helping the dream become real, you get all of the benefits of the previous levels. This is just you showing up and showing out for me.

You have the right to leave a request in the message to me, if you do this level. I can't promise it will be done, but if it isn't insane, illegal, or hurtful, I'll try my damnedest to do it.

And you know me - I mean that sincerely.

You get everything, before, and I legitimately can't imagine what you'd want in return but ask. I'll come to you and cook bacon. You can cook bacon on my show. I'll cook bacon on your show.

Realistically, I don't expect anyone to show out for this, but my mom used to say "You never know if you don't ask".

So, here we are.

$0 of $1 per month
With just a single contribution of $1 a month...

Even one dollar per month, from enough people, gives me the ability to support the arts around Sacramento (open mics, free lessons in the park, gas money, meeting and supporting other artists, supplies for when I work with/teach poetry to kids and adults who aren’t normally exposed to poetry, setting up shows, working with the city to help grow the arts).

Some words from a previous venture...representing this city in the National Poetry Slam, 2015 (first team for this city in 7 years).
