MinuteEarth Abhilash- We look forward to hearing your thoughts on this topic. But we’ll jump in now to ignite some discussion. As with all our videos, there are many other influential factors which are important to the topic at hand, but which must be ignored in each video, given its length. So for certain, there are many nuances as to what causes plant diversity, business diversity, language diversity and cultural diversity, which we do not mention. But to the best of our capability, everything we said is backed up by data and peer-reviewed science. There are data that indicate that on average, the number of businesses is smaller in rich countries than in poor countries (e.g., Iyigun and Owen 1998), and reasonable scientists argue that similar economic processes may be at work in both plant ecology and business ecology. That doesn't mean there aren't other ways in which those two kinds of ecosystems differ, but the role of resource competition is fundamental to both economics and ecology, and the idea that they may share some similar resource economic regulation has both theoretical and empirical support. Similarly, our point about cultural and linguistic diversity being higher in climatically stable places, where humans have been the longest, and where economic resources are scare also has support from the scientific community (Fearon 2003, Maffi 2005, Nettle 1998, Sutherland 2003). There is a lot of variability within this relationship and clearly there are many other factors that influence all of these kinds of diversity. But our overarching point is not inconsistent with economic, anthropological, and ecological theory. And finally, we were not definitive in our language- we said that the human landscape “seems to follow a similar pattern” as the vegetative landscape. Our intent with this video was to get people thinking about what does cause diversity to be high or low. Whether and when high diversity (or low) is desirable is another equally interesting issue, which would be interesting to discuss (and even make a video about!). Again we look forward to learning from you about this topic so don’t hesitate to write back. Oh, and by the way, a subset of the scientific papers we used in developing the video are shown on the channel- we'd be glad to share the full set if you are interested. All the best, MinuteEarth team

Abhilash Nambiar Have you had a chance to read the email that I sent you? I was hoping to have a private conversation about it and given that I was given your email address I thought you preferred it too. The comment section for an artist's creation in a crowd funding platform seems hardly a proper place to have a scientific discussion.

MinuteEarth Abhilash - Yes! Thank you for your email. As public educators, we are happy to have educational discussions in public places, as that means more people are able to learn! However, given your preference, we have responded in your email. Best, Alex on behalf of the MinuteEarth team

Park Ranger Great video, I was most pleasantly surprised to see the inclusion of some human ecology in this discussion of diversity. Economy needs a good dose of ecology, after all!

Ken Blackman Got it. So most moons in our solar system are tidally locked. None (?) of the planets are tidally locked with the sun. Are they headed that way, for the same reason? When will that happen?
March 2, 2015 20:01:50 · Reply
MinuteEarth The strength of tidal forces goes down as 1/r^3, so it gets much weaker the farther you are. That's why the moon is the major tidal influence on earth, even though the overall force of the sun's gravity on us is WAY bigger. Earth's tidal locking with the sun is predicted to take much longer than it will take for the sun to die (or something like that)

Austine Wallace I wonder if there are possibilities of extracting antibodies against anthrax and botulinum from scavengers to create new vaccines.

old_MK And, um, WHY would we spend a dime (even if that's all it took) to save a louse?! Lice are a nasty, parasitic species that probably spreads disease... As for the panda........that IS a toughie. They ARE awfully cute, but they're so darned sensitive and "niche-y" that one wonders if it's worth it. Hate to say it, but I asked the same question about 10 years ago. Pandas are so sensitive that even if we weren't screwing up the planet, they might still be in trouble... * sigh * It's a tough question...

Michael Kaufman Great video. I will never cancel my Patron support as long as you continue to support worthy causes like the demise of the panda. If you want to start a campaign to actually go out and actively drive them instinct, count me in for that as well.

old_MK Well, I was familiar with the basic fact, as evidenced by what your car's windshield looks like after it's been rained on & it dries, but I surely didn't know all the intimate details about water molecules and water clusters. Very interesting! You guys are awesome!

old_MK Excellent! However, if I have to look like a NMR in order to live longer, then never mind! No, seriously, it's good research to maybe help some people with certain medical conditions, I suppose, or perhaps to help us to look and feel younger and better while we're here, but I certainly DON'T want to live forever. 70 - 100 years is plenty for me, thank you!
