About Architecture Fringe

ABOUT
The Architecture Fringe supports agency and inspires change within the built environment.

We are a networked organisation of people and projects, rooted in Scotland, who care about the wider commongood. Our pursuit of a more plural culture of architecture, with greater equality, diversity and well-being, is anchored in an ongoing process of personal, collective and systemic change.

Our vision is to:
  • Engender one of the most plural, critical and progressive communities of architectural culture in the world
  • Embed that culture within our wider contemporary social, political and environmental contexts
  • Enrich that culture and cultivate joy

Our goals are to:
  • Provide platforms for discourse: we do this by opening up spaces for conversation, connection and the development of ideas to make the radical real
  • Create new work supporting progressive change: we do this through producing a core events programme and administering an open events programme that fosters connections between people, projects and ideas

Since inception we have achieved the following:
  • the creation, from scratch, of an internationally recognised, grassroots-led, invigorating, free, open platform festival for new ideas, new voices and new work
  • the encouragement and mutual-support of other vital and emerging initiatives and organisations
  • growing international recognition of the work and activity of the Architecture Fringe as an exemplar festival and organisation, sharing work from Scotland to a wider audience
  • fostered with intent a mixing of the architecture, design and art scenes in Scotland to break down inter-disciplinary barriers to encourage new intersectional work and ideas
  • creation of the first ever national graduate

How the Architecture Fringe is structured and assembled is unique within the world of architecture and design festivals. The curation of a core programme, which conceptualises and commissions new creative work, is paired with a facilitated open-access open programme which is not creatively sanctioned. The oscillating energy between the core and open programmes is then amplified across Scotland as a national festival, with work created around the country. No other built environment organisation or festival in the world operates in this specific way.

PRODUCTION TEAM
Initiated by a group of architects, designers, photographers, engineers, visual artists, curators and musicians, the Architecture Fringe is an independent contributor-led series of projects and events across the arts which explores architecture and its impact.

The team for the Architecture Fringe devise and produce the core programme of events as well as facilitate the open platform for self-directed work. All team members are volunteers and bring skills and experience from across the event and creative industries.

WE ARE
Architect and photographer Andy Summers, landscape architects Liane Bauer and Marion Preez, architects Chris Dobson, Louisa Butler and Shona Common, designer Neil McGuire, activist & designer Scott McAulay, and architectural assistants Rūta Turčinavičiūtė, Matthaios Lymperopoulos and Raina Armstrong.

TAKE PART
The Architecture Fringe is open to everyone, and we hope you’ll join us on this journey!

The very first Architecture Fringe opened on Friday 1st July 2016. The 2017 programme hosted work from around 260 contributors over 50 projects in 37 venues. The 2018 programme saw the range and geographical spread of events grow even further. The Architecture Fringe 2019 was the largest and most geographically widespread to date. The programme of events and wider activity continued the upswell of energy, agency and creative risk-taking that the previous editions of the festival had nurtured.

The 2021 Architecture Fringe will run from the 4th - 20th Jun 2021 with the theme (Un)Learning.

WHY PATREON
Since inception the Architecture Fringe has always paid its commissioned contributors and guest speakers but has been entirely run by unpaid volunteers. We are unable to carry on in this manner without the proper support. The creation and production of new, high quality work and the continuing, ever-growing demand for the platform requires resources.

We have always had ambitions to create something which had a creative future, is well-produced, well-managed, beautiful, open, friendly, professional and relevant.

THANK YOU
With your support, we can continue to nourish and develop critically-required new conversations and approaches for architecture in Scotland; we can continue to provide a test-bed for innovation and new ideas; we can continue to foster direct action around the wicked problems facing our industry - environmental impact, representation, well-being and the modernisation of practice culture.

We understand that finding solutions to these problems is an endeavour we share with you. Supporting the Architecture Fringe will help uncover the radical approaches we need to address the issues we face in the 21st Century.
