About Hazel Glass

When I discovered papercut art, most of what I saw was made out of single sheet of black or white paper. From my very first piece I pushed those boundaries, by using color and multiple layers to create interwoven contrast and compositions with depth.

Firmly believing that bigger is not better, I find both the meticulous technical challenges and resulting delicacy of working small too intriguing to ignore. Using an x-acto blade, I hand cut each layer separately, building them up from a 2D drawing into intricate bas-relief sculptures. My inspirations range from the meditative symmetry of illuminated manuscripts and Islamic art, to the organic patterns of nature. From textiles and tiles, to sediment strata, rusted metal and weathered wood grain, I strive to reinvent them with nothing but paper. The results are precious windows into abstract worlds. My use of the full spectrum of color truly brings these worlds to life. Whether the palette is vibrant or muted, it is an integral part of the work. And while the design is what my art is saying, color is the tone of voice through which each piece speaks.

So perhaps you'd like to join me as I continue to explore and push the boundaries of what paper art can be. Along the way you will watch my work bloom in new ways, through ongoing experiments with combining my illustrations and my cut paper. You can also gain insights into my ever-developing process, which I hope will fuel your own inspiration, and help you to see the magic all around us through my personal, otherworldly visions.

$100 of $300 per month
With this amount I can afford to get a desperately-needed studio space, with room to work and storage (at the moment I'm tripping over boxes and teetering stacks, yeesh!)
