August 2015 - Step-By-Step Preview #1

Wheeeeeeeeee!

This is the first of two previews that I'm just now getting together, in no small part due to the fact that both images fought me every single step of the way! You know... that moment when you realize what the story is for your picture and you know exactly what you want to do? I don't always get that feeling for every single picture, but I did for this one, and that was the point at which the picture started cooperating. It's almost as if it could hear me being all bossy and ordering it around, and decided to dig in its heels and be contrary.

On the bright side, I did get to add in a couple of extra screen captures with hints about cloth simulation.  It's not a lot, but I was inspired to go back and grab those screen-captures by the talk about cloth simulation tutorials in previous posts.  I really, really hope that this helps a wee little bit!!!!

In the end, I probably over-thought this image too much and should have come back to it... but alas, deadlines present themselves, and such is not always possible. So, without further ado, I bring you this month's first Step-By-Step preview!

Silveri Moonlight Designs Oh my... *stares at the preview, jaw hanging somewhere about knees* That is just gorgeous!!! I really like how the pale colouration on the horse's neck draws your attention there and then upwards towards the woman's expression. *peers closer* Are those handcuffs?! No wonder she looks so miserable! Handcuffs they are, the reigns of her horse are disappearing off screen... and arrows in the ground. A battle! To the victor the spoils! :D Her story? A summary of "Sucks to be you right now!" sums it up, I think! ;) I am VERY familiar with that feeling. What happens with me is, I know what I want in the picture, I have a very clear vision but translating that idea onto the screen? More often than not, it's a battle with the idea kicking and screaming the entire time. Can't wait to dive into this Step-by-Step!! :D

August 2015 - Tutorial #1 - Preview #3

My labor of love.

Not only did I go back over every bit of color notes that I've ever written for a seminar, but I reviewed old textbooks, perused countless pieces of artwork, and basically researched until my eyes wanted to fall out of their skull. This is a -very- subjective color wheel, which means that a) we'll probably re-do it at some point (yes, I said "we", as in you and I), and b) it is very, very open to interpretation. If you feel differently from what this color wheel states, go with your own gut. I am a big believer in trusting your own instincts, especially when it comes to color, because the meaning of any color is different to the experiences of -every- single person and because those meanings can also change so much in context.

That is why you will be also getting a copy of this wheel completely without writing: in case you need to look at a variety of colors without being "colored" (heehee!) by my own personal views of what each color means.

This color wheel will be available to Patrons that sign up for tutorials for the month of August, 2015.

- Patrons ONLY will be receiving the full-sized color wheels at 20,000 by 15,000 pixels, along with my signed permission (made out to the name/email listed on your Patreon) to go to a printing service such as Costco or Kinkos if you would like a copy printed for your own personal use. (Please don't sell this... my heart would break into a thousand pieces and more.)

- Patrons ONLY will also receive 25% scale versions for ease of viewing. I tested and the text is still clear at this size: that is actually the size I had it while I did most of the written work.

I would like to post a version to my deviantArt gallery eventually... someday... what do you think, should it be the version without any words at all, or should it just be a reeaaaaaaally tiny and tough-to-read version? I want to keep it special for you guys, that's my first concern!

The final wheel may have a few amendments and appear slightly different to this preview, as I sleep on it, look for typographical errors, and think of more color meanings to add. Muahahhaaaaa!

OMG! I will get the step-by-step picture previews put together this weekend, now that this has stopped consuming my life so much!

Silveri Moonlight Designs Sweet mother of Merlin! O.o So much detail, so much information crammed onto this canvas! You've done an absolutely amazing job with this! I definitely agree with the previous comment that it looks like a glowing iris, not only in the email preview but this page here. Shiny!! As for uploading it onto your dA, I think the only problem would be releasing it into the wild like that is you would have even less control over who had access to it. I think after all the hard work you put into this (and risking blindness to get everything perfect) it would be completely understandable if you wanted to control who has access to it. Even without the words, an insane level of work went into the creation of the wheel itself. In the end, it's entirely up to you, how you wanted to share it, or if you wanted to keep it underwraps for your Patreon.

Silveri Moonlight Designs CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! (Agh! Done it again. Edit is my friend today!) This isn't so much a storytelling thing, but I would love to see your thoughts about dynamic cloth. The sheer number of settings makes it overwhelming to get one's head around; any tips and tricks for getting a smooth simulation and avoiding the cloth bunching up oddly. Otherwise, I think whatever you have planned will be absolutely awesome and informative! (NOW I can hit enter! *facepalm*)

August 24, 2015 07:57:27 · Reply

Mary Williams Omigosh, dynamic cloth is a HUGE monster.... and I regret to say one that I am pretty sure changes with every new piece that we simulate. It's always going to take at least a little experimentation, if only because the mesh for each piece of dynamic cloth is designed differently. There are a few things I could write up, though.... I know you said tips and tricks, but specifically are you thinking more something for beginners to keep in mind (general info), or specific tips for getting cloth to drape in tricky situations? (We can do both, I'm just trying to figure out which one would be better to do first!) Thankya for the suggestion!!!!!! (I do the thing with Enter, too. Finally figured out that holding down shift when you hit enter gives you a proper line break instead of sending off the post. Such tricky comment boxes!!!)

August 26, 2015 02:57:51 · Reply

Silveri Moonlight Designs Yes, that is definitely a huge factor of trying to master dynamic cloth - every piece you use has to have different settings, different simulations just to get it looking nice in the end. For starters, I think a 'general info' for beginners to keep in mind (and not have a panic attack at all the dials and options! lol) would be the best place to start. Start with the basics and then build on that. A brief rundown on the dials, highlighting the more important once for simulating different cloth types (silk vs heavy fabric) would be good for beginners as well. Draping the cloth in tricky situation would be excellent as well, like the figure in a dynamic dress sitting on the floor, with her knees drawn up to her chest-- or something less O.o inducing with the stress and complexity, of the figure sitting on a chair and having the cloth falling nicely around her feet. Hahaha!! Tricky comment boxes bug the hell out of me. So many times the other day when I was trying to type a message and only wanted a line break, I kept hitting Enter. "OMG WOULD YOU STOP DOING THAT!!!" lol Tonight, I have short-circuited the whole thing and written this comment in Notepad! :D

Margy I would love to see a tutorial about the dynamic hair in Poser. Especially to create it for animals, to make their fur look more realistic.

August 25, 2015 09:25:53 · Reply

Mary Williams Ooooh. That's a good one! I'm not -too- familiar with fur inside of Poser, so it'd be an awesome chance to experiment with and learn things for me, too!

All the pledges except 2 have been processed already, I think that's a record! XD This month's ShareTheLove is going to Draskia, to buy some art for our Woebegone project. Regardless of how little she charges me, she'll get a full $75. She's given so much free stuff to the community, I really wanted to make sure she got some love in return. I need to sort through the list to see who left us this weekend, and which pledges need updating. There may be an email or two coming your way, if you've not updated your IGN or reward. It's time to run to the post office for more stamps, I ran out from the party! After I do that, I'll finish up the patron rewards. ^-^ Whitelist for the Patron Server opening will be set by this weekend. If you'd like to be added for next month, you'll need to make sure your pledge is $3+ and that I have your IGN. **Soft Opening (UHC!!) for Patrons Only 3/21, expect a modpack download next week** Official open is last weekend of March. This is going to be a fun month. #hypehypehype <3

Thanks so much for a year's support!

Hey everyone! Thank you for supporting Graphoniac, the entertainer. This has been one wonderful year of learning and growing, hopefully it's been as entertaining for you as it was for me. This coming year I expect to find a good groove, now that I've spent a year "finding who I am" as a brand. XD This month's ShareTheLove is going to DukeMinecraft, as soon as the money clears, shortly after the 5th. Next month will be BenBaptist, as a thanks for hosting our bot. :) Be prepared, sometime in the next 2-3 months, I will be adding a $3 reward for whitelisting on the patron server. MK and I are talking about teaming up to have a dual patron server.. it will be a brand new map, and open only when one of us is streaming. And on that note, I am working on a new streaming schedule. It will be based on the baby's naps and Rosie's school schedule, but I'd love to know what times are good for you, so please comment below with that. ^-^ Be thinking, too, about the patron party on jan 30th! We'll have a cosplay contest, with a prize for the winner. Theme: Favorite Nerd. I will be Ramona Flowers. Dibs. ;) Get a picture of your cosplay ready for tweeting/sharing. If you're not comfortable showing face, either PM me or crop your face out or lay out the outfit and shoot that. <3 I'm working on the patron rewards today, should be done by this weekend. If you haven't updated your reward since I rearranged, please do, it affects how my spreadsheet lays out. Thanks!!

Batronyx I'm a 9-5 (Central Time) worker. The occasional "regular" stream outside normal working hours would be cool. I also really enjoy the monthly marathons. Your occasional weekend partner streaming ( not regular stream, i.e. BBT with Deci ) are good too. Here's to another great year!

Selah (AspieGamer13) (as you kind of know...) I work evenings (typically as early as 4 PM Eastern til as late as 2 AM Eastern), and usually 6 days a week (Tuesday is usually my day off (great to catch SMB Live). My schedule could be ANYthing, ANY week. I'm a night owl, so I tend not to go to bed until close to the crack of dawn and sleep til early-mid afternoon. Unfortunately, this means most of your streams I will miss some/all of. I can usually catch the last half of the monthly 12 hour stream, plus SMB Live, but that tends to be it. Summery: not really any specific time that works best for me, but I'll still try to catch what I can.

Almost time to drum up some serious hype...

On January 30th, the #GraphiteLockin will be all about YOU! It will be my one year anniversary on Patreon, and I want to celebrate with you. Here's what we have planned so far: This month we *WILL* get the cube map done and gone, and then we will put the Moonlight Map full time on my SuperSecretServer. Our Patron Hangouts for the months of November and December will be spent working on the map, to finish the Road of Awesome, and gear up for the PatronParty in January. During the Party, we'll work on building a Patron City at the end of the Road of Awesome, and all patrons will be welcome to build in stream! By the end of stream, we'll offer the map as a download for all the world to enjoy our work. I'll have a sign-up sheet for those who plan to be there, and we'll probably vote on a few steam games to interrupt the building tedium. There will also be game & swag giveaways all night long, I already have enough games in stock to have 1 game every hour, and there are whispers of other things... shhh.. I'm stoked, you guys. So stoked. If you have any ideas, PLEASE share. Let's make this a party to remember!

Thank you so much. So. Much.

I can't get over how supportive y'all are. This thing that I do, this "content producing" hobby of mine is one of the most important things in my life right now, it is my thing for me, where I get to relax and recharge and be creative... and you help me make it happen every month. This means more than words to me. I'm on an Artists kick for the Share the Love donation, and this month we'll be hugging Van, the guy who made my killer intro. He seriously undercharged me (IMO) for the classy work he did, and deserves recognition for his skill. When the monies clear my paypal, I'll send a little his way and let you know. Many of you have said you don't mind how I spend the monies I receive, but I feel an upfront policy can be healthy and helpful here. My internet bill went up slightly so that I could have the freedom to change my ip when ddos'd, $130 of what I receive now goes to that. I am watching for a data-cap & contract free alternative, so far nothing. Fingers crossed for fiber! ;) $20-30 each month goes to the community via ShareTheLove. Every month a few payments don't get processed, on average about $12' worth, also subtract approximately 9% for all the fees. I am now setting aside a portion of the remainder for minecon/playoncon/other youtube related meetups. And if I have any left over, I'd like to use it for a once-a-week yoga class. I need a group for exercising, and none of the other options even remotely appeal to me. I just took my first class today, and I'm sold. This is a thing that I need, to help me find center and focus and energy. The impact on my youtube life may be indirect, but I am not sure I'll be able to youtube if my seasonal depression gets out of hand again; this is a measured preventive step. Phew, feels good to get all that out there, if there's no new business, I'd say this meeting is adjourned. <3 hugs and chocolate, and fist bumps for those who don't like either.

12 hour stream #8, and we're pretty much all vets here. Well, mostly. Here's an overview of the perks and guidelines with my 12 hour streams: ALL patrons are welcome to crash the teamspeak. If you don't have the information by now, DM one of the mods. **If we are playing a game, we might move to a smaller channel and leave the patrons to chat amongst themselves for the sake of the stream. Feel free to take advantage of your patron status on teamspeak and move about the channels, so long as you don't interrupt the stream. **I have strongly trusted mods in stream and in teamspeak. When I am streaming, I depend on them to make decision on my behalf and will back them up if they decide someone needs to be removed from teamspeak for whatever reason. You may dispute things AFTER the stream in DM. **Please remember that this is not a patron hangout, but a stream, and I have to strike a balance between fun and professional. Help me out: stay classy. This week should be fun. IF I touch minecraft at all, it'll be the last few hours in the morning, just doing grindy stuff. That's how I used to end the streams, though I've not done that in a few months, it's still an option. I've got a handful of steam games that I want to play, some with pre-set players, and some that we'll poll the chat/patrons for. Help me make sure we rotate well, so that everyone gets a chance to play, as much as possible... I tend to lose track of these things. See you in a few hours! <3
