I'm Suzette Hammond, the founder of Being Tea. My company is a bit unique in that I am entirely focused on education and training.

Teaching tea is what I do for a living as my work, what I live and breathe, and I am deeply passionate about education.

This Patreon program is about supporting equity in education.

Your support here on Patreon is used to fund scholarships for folks from marginalized communities – both from tea/coffee industry trade and not - to be able to have tea educational support in their life. Here's how.

I'm creating availability for scholarship funds to assist in 3 areas:
     1) Personal study through my general education program
     2) Assistance with professional training for their small business
     3) Tuition for Being Tea’s 7-month professional Teacher Training program

Here’s how these programs breakdown, in terms of our funding needs:
  • $60 = One year of general education program, videos only
  • $120 = One year of general education program, videos + live classes
  • $300 - $600 = 6 months to one year of Small Business support program
  • $1500 = Full ride tuition for Teacher Training

In each Patreon tier, a description is included for what level of support you are contributing to, specifically. Some levels also come with special perks for you, too, such as live event tickets or membership in my online program!

To begin, this program will exclusively fund support for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and Persons of Color), and LGBTQ+ folks. This is open to persons both inside and outside the United States (where I am based), although priority will be given for right now to US-based folks on waitlist.

We'll eventually expand to include support for non-US students who come from areas of conflict or political / religious / economic hardship, as well as those with vulnerable immigration status. Priority will also be given to students - US and elsewhere - who are applying their tea knowledge skills for community support purposes.

Available tuition funds are assigned in order to approved students. (Kindly note: I do not ask for a financial statement of need from marginalized folks, but some programs – especially Teacher Training – do require a friendly written and/or livestream interview process)

I've structured everything I offer to be as accessible as possible, at half the price of comparable professional development programs. This includes everything from my monthly educational programs available for individuals, to small business support, and teacher training programs.

To go deeper, though, requires a paradigm shift for understanding why some voices have been left out - historically marginalized folks, without financial means or expected job titles. There must be room to give freely, uplift, and invest in these futures.

Scholarships are the way to break down these barriers, creating equity in who gets the privilege to learn.

Creating scholarship opportunities has been a goal since the launch of Being Tea, and we're finally at a point now where that can become a reality!

When I was first getting started in tea (this was in 2003), in a vulnerable place as I navigated a rocky, unknown transition from my previous career path, I benefitted from generous, kind people who saw me and made room for my potential. In this new home, I wasn’t judged for my age, my lack of academic qualifications, the job title that I held. I just was – and got to be – tea. The ability for me to be what I wanted wasn’t questioned.

As I transitioned to working more with the wider industry, I felt suddenly exposed, without my nest. There were professional expectations, experiences, and financial backing that I just didn’t have yet. I was deeply self-conscious of this and spent years judging myself for not being “enough,” not being there yet.

It was only by the grace of finding places to volunteer my time professionally that I was able to keep growing and learning in tea, because I certainly couldn’t pay the cost of admission without help. And I met new colleagues and friends who also did not judge me for my position in life. I’ve thought a lot about those early years as I’ve kept going in tea.

In 2015, I founded Being Tea as a means to offer education that’s accessible, affordable, and geared toward everyday life and enjoyment. Tea for enrichment. Tea that shows you that you are enough.

My own practice is informed by nearly two decades of immersion in the professional world of tea as a working trainer. My teaching style is grounded in sensory engaged adult learning principles, with a unique focus on accessibility issues, equity, and psychologically sensitive teaching. Additionally, I'm also a certified trauma informed yoga and meditation teacher, as well as a trained journalist. In 2018, I was awarded for my dedication to tea education with a World Tea Award for Best Tea Educator.
