Hi, my name is Steve Purcell and my hobbies are gardening and Belmar Records.
My real job is playing double bass in bands in Melbourne's thriving roots music scene, a long established sub set of it's general music scene which is generally world class.
(our ABBA cover bands tour Sweden )
At Belmar records, I invite people around for dinner and then afterwards lure them out to the recording studio, often musicians and singers who I've admired for years but sometimes people i've only just met or heard of.
It's a labor of love and we aim to make the very best records we can with the combination of forces that evening, usually a version of our studio band The Belmar house band and one or two other invited guests.
The Belmar house band (blue team) - aka The Pearly Shells Hot 5Sometimes the invited guests bring guests and sometimes they even send deps but recording always happens, for over five years now. We've only released a small bit of whats recorded, check our Bandcamp
We want release more music, more often and more often on vinyl.
We are looking for sponsors to pledge money on a per release basis thru this Patreon page.
All money goes towards making more records and to the musicians that made them.
Hope you can help, understand if you can't.

About Belmar Records
Belmar Records is a musician owned & operated label/studio/production house. It aims to document Melbourneʼs sprawling roots music scene, one track at a time.
If you donʼt live here we should say Melbourne is a BIG LIVE-MUSIC TOWN and it has been for decades.
We have our fair share of classical musicians and cover bands but itʼs the dedicated and creative roots music scene playing Blues, Jazz, Soul, RnB, Rock-a-billy, Reggae, Country, Rock and roll, Western swing, Bluegrass and the rest that make Melbourne special and what we aim to get on tape.
We've only just scratched the surface.
At Belmar Records we don't let money get in the way of the creative process and as a result a lot of great roots music has been produced that may not have been otherwise.
What started as a trickle when we released Belmar records Top 10 vol 1 five years ago is becoming a serious plumbing issue.
What’s the problem?Unfortunately the record business is a bit broken at the moment. Cds sales and paid digital downloads are declining as people turn to streaming platforms like Spotify etc.
Some people believe they are supporting musicians by paying for their streaming services but the amounts coming back are miniscule.
What is Patreon?Fortunately the digital world that bought us Spotify and the likes has bought us Patreon - a platform that allows people to directly support artists and musicians on a project by project basis.
In the current climate where the actual value of recorded music is approaching nil, we ask people to put their own value on the music we produce.
Itʼs an opportunity to push back against the ill-founded belief that all music should somehow be free.
Our Patreon page allows subscribers to contribute a small (or larger) amount each time we release a record. We repay the favour by sending them the new music in digital, CD or vinyl form (depending on their subscription level)
Where does the money go?All money raised goes towards producing more records and to help pay the musicians, producers and engineers that made them.
To cut to the chase, we need
- $1000 in combined subscriptions means we can release albums on CD.
- $1800 in combined subscriptions to release a 7" vinyl Single or 4 track EP
- $3000 in combined subscriptions for a Belmar album to go 12" vinyl!
If you can help, please click the subscription tier on the left of this page which suits you.
Our patrons will receive this ever expanding library on vinyl, CD or to download and the knowledge they are supporting Melbourneʼs unique and diverse roots music scene.
cheers Steve Purcell

PS - Our Patreon page is set up to charge subscribers on a 'per release' basis, (not monthly as some do)
We initially plan 3-5 releases per year, if there's no release in a particular month, you will not be charged.
PPS - If the process of direct debit used by Patreon is not to your likeing, you can still support us buying music thru our bandcamp page by direct donation.
