Here are a few things I’m excited about doing through Patreon...
Scotch and Vinyl TV – SAVTV
Broadcast from my home - chatting w viewers about vinyl, hifi equipment, and spinning records. Once a month.

Playing records with friends, talking shit about music and even the stereo itself, has always been a part of my creative process. When I reach for a record that I want to play, and realize that that record doesn't yet exist, I know it's time for me to make that record myself.

I’ve never lost interest in vinyl. Even over the era when none of my peers made music for vinyl anymore, I just couldn't let it go. I had the label press vinyl, even in limited numbers, and even when I had to pay the bill, for all my major releases. Now vinyl is king again, and I can breathe a sigh of relief – I really thought it was a goner for a while!

Since the return of vinyl, I've noticed we’ve forgotten how to play records. A new generation of vinyl enthusiasts is having to reinvent the wheel. It doesn’t have to be rocket science, but it does require a little attention - setting up the turntable, cleaning your records etc. It's nice to have a few friends help you with that.

While playing records, offering commentary on what you're hearing, and sipping scotch from my writing room once a month, I’ll be connected with those patrons on this tier who want to learn a few simple things, and I hope to get tips for myself from some knowledgeable chat room gurus who we might meet.

I’ve got a reasonable collection of records, and I’ll spend each broadcast on a musical theme. We'll pay attention to the songs, the production, the reproduction. I’ll leave the chat room open for conversation, commentary, requests, and recommendations. I’ll hook up a different turntable sometimes, and together we can learn a few things about how to get the most out of them. We'll see where that all goes...

Rock This Bitch TV – RTBTV
Broadcast from the recording studio.
Once a month.

At least once a month, I'm going to write and record a song in the studio, generated by your lyrics, in an hour and change, live. Patrons on this tier can send in lyrics, and together decide which ones I'm going to work with. I may end up overdubbing a whole band myself, or it might be best as a vocal/piano recording.  Sometimes I'll have a guest musician, or band.  But however it happens, we'll have a new song by the end of the broadcast.

The idea is take some of the mystery out of the process of creating. To keep moving. You've got to fail and bust your ass sometimes to create. You have to take a risk. Sometimes it pays off. Sometimes it crashes and burns. We’ll see what happens and I’ll submit myself to this process once a month on Rock This Bitch TV!

                  Following Interests

Almost anything that’s ever made me happy, propelled my art or my career, has been a result of following an interest - when it's possible (and safe) to do. At first, following my interest can look like a self indulgent detour. But it always leads somewhere, and if not, at least I remained inspired. If nothing else, I usually meet interesting people along the way, and I'm introduced to new ideas. So that's what propels me to take a little detour to follow some interests.

Patreon

Like all recording artists, I’ve kept my eye on what creative tools the internet might afford.  Patreon is unique, ever developing, and above all, it’s a platform that interests me. And so, at this moment, I’m following that. I’ve read the directions on my Roland video controller (and I never read directions!), got a few HDMI cables for my Sony cameras, my 'strap on' Shure lavalier mic (remind me to turn that off when I take a bathroom break), and I’m off to the webcam races. It’s all a damn miracle isn’t it?

The way I see it, I’ve spent an entire career traveling, coming to your towns to play music. Now I’m inviting you to my place. And I’m not one of those assholes that makes you take off your shoes at the door. Drop by for a drink, some records, and to make up some music. Patreon is a platform organizes this in a way that seems creative and musical for me, and I’m interested to see where else it all might lead.
