Songs and Stories!
First, a "Bonus" fable every month, just like the ones written for the "Fable of the Month Club," delivered straight to your inbox. This is part of a project that began as a Burning Man project in 2015, and has since spiraled out of control, becoming one of the most sought after things I do. But these stories are only available here, or as part of gift experiences and art projects I co-create.
The second thing is a song.
I'm a little famous in the circles I travel in for my singing - especially sea chanties, Celtic music, American folk, music and union songs. I've decided to do quick and dirty recordings of my entire library of memorized songs and post them all here for patrons. At any level of support, you'll get a traditional song (some accompanied, mostly acapella) sent to your inbox on an occasional basis.
Receive an occasional newsletter and an annual “thank you.”
Benjamin's Book Club
How often you get these depends on what I'm reading and how long it takes. Hopefully at least one a month
- Two books of fables that have become sacred gifts which cannot be bought;
- A collection of Fairy Tales for Adults that has saved my soul;
- A ritual for a whimsical community;
- A poetic constitution for a collective of artists;
- A historical conspiracy for a secret event that could only be given as a gift …
…These are things I could not have imagined writing just a few short years ago, and they beckon me towards extraordinary new horizons of my art. This must be cultivated – and that cultivation works best when it happens on its own terms, instead of trying to fit a market.
You, my patrons - my community - will help me achieve that: you’ll give me the freedom to follow the work I am called to do (instead of what I can get published this month) and see where it leads me. Every meaningless freelance assignment you keep me from having to do will be time and energy reinvested into writing that is meaningful, and a building block to something profound.
In gratitude, I’ll share with you the work that I’ll produce as practice – the writing that I create both for its own sake and to hone my craft. Essays on culture and politics, new bar columns in the style of my much loved bar column for the SF Weekly (“Distillations”), a new fable each month, and even a look at some of the most interesting experimental work I create … the seeds of my creative unconscious … week after week.
And as I take the time you’ve given me and the practice I’ve put it towards to produce works worthy of everything I have, I’ll share that process with you too.
I believe amazing things are on the horizon as I take control of my artistic life, stepping out from the marketplace and towards truth and beauty for their own sake.
I could not be more grateful for your support.
When I have 250 patrons, a community of people around my writing, I'm going to make it, and see how far it goes.
