Tier 1's patron only posts about current work-in-progress including general feelings, minor details, and submission process, but also the occasional reprint of a story that was popular with readers or just a story of mine that I love.
Along with tiers 1 and 2, this tier will help inspire me to reprise the column I once wrote for DARK DISCOVERIES, AMERICAN GAUTHIC. I would start by reprinting the original essays, written between 2004 and 2011, along with addendums to those essays, and then would begin adding more new installments. If you're new to AMERICAN GAUTHIC, it was a column like some of Harlan Ellison's columns (AN EDGE IN MY VOICE, THE GLASS TEAT, and THE HARLAN ELLISON HORNBOOK). I talked about whatever I fancied at the time. I may talk about things I'm watching or reading, politics, whatever pops into my head. This could be monthly or quarterly, depending on life at that moment.
I'm a teacher by day and a writer by night. Somewhere in between I'm a father and a husband and a friend and a son and a brother and a pain in the ass and all that stuff. The thing I really think of myself as, though, is a writer.
I've had mostly short fiction published and a couple of novellas. Anyone who might look at my bibliography will see that my publishing has all but ceased in the last several years. Work, grad school, parenting are all partly responsible. But I've also been writing novels. It's been a long journey and I'm coming at this feeling fresh and new. Since last year, I've polished and begun submitting a novel that took me ten years (on and off) to write, I've written a middle-grade science fiction adventure novel that's in its first draft, and I'm nearly done with the first draft of another adult novel. Both the adult novels are horror/supernatural suspense. In the coming months and years, I intend to look into more venues for my writing, fiction and nonfiction, but I need help.
Being a writer in the 21st century means things are more difficult than they once were. My stories, I'm told, are really good. They've appeared in Bram Stoker Award-winning anthologies, magazines, and my former column, American Gauthic, ran in the magazine Dark Discoveries between 2004 and 2011. Still, without the help of those cheering me on, without the extra money it would take to help pay bills, it will be more difficult for the writing to continue at the speed and at the volume I feel myself capable.
With the help of patrons, I just know that I can reach new heights in my writing career. My wife and daughters, one in her early twenties, the other in early elementary school, are looking on and cheering me on. I'd like to buy a house for us, with a room for me to write in, and a yard for my little one to play in.
