About BFR

At Binghamton Food Rescue, we know that food insecurity and housing insecurity go hand in hand. Since July, we’ve been paying a group of local moms to cook meals for folks in temporary emergency housing. With the homeless shelters full, the Broome County Department of Social Services has been housing people at places like the Del Motel, where the owners don’t even provide toilet paper.

The nearest grocery store is a 40 minute walk down Route 11 and the closest food establishments are Dunkin (15 minute walk) and Burger King (30 min walk). The folks that do receive help from SNAP only get around $75 for the entire month. Even the nearest bus stop is a 20 min walk. So folks have to spend several hours each day getting food on top of looking for housing and work. Many have to take a cab to even cash a check.

Once approved for emergency housing, apartment logs must be filled out weekly proving they are looking for housing. But with only $400 on average from DSS, how is anyone supposed to find a place in Binghamton? Often when an affordable place comes up it is strictly student housing. DSS gives one warning if logs are not completed then folks are kicked out. Anyone who gets rejected from accessing this sketchy emergency housing is forced to spend 30 days out on the street before they can even reapply. The waiting list for public housing in Binghamton is about 5 years.

Along with hot meals, we’ve sent groceries, can openers, clothes, and hygiene products to the motels, but we’re firm believers that Home Cooking is a Human Right and we need to do more than just provide resources to help people survive day to day. We need to show love and care and make it clear to everyone (especially those in power) that the housing situation in Broome County is – and has been – completely unacceptable.
