About

I am the founder and songwriter for the ethereal / gothic / ambient act Black Tape For A Blue Girl. I also create electronic / darkAmbient music under my own name and under As Lonely As Dave Bowman. My day job is running America's premier darkwave / electronic label, Projekt Records. And if that's not enough, I'm a half-a-week dad to my amazing 12.5 year old son. We live here in Portland with our cat, Harley, who has sort of become Projekt's mascot. I really appreciate your interest in what I do.

   SHORT VERSION:     If you enjoy Blacktape's music, want exclusive access to unreleased new work, and can pledge $2 or more a month, join here to become a patron. Every contribution, large or small, helps!

Hi, it’s Sam from Black Tape For A Blue Girl. Thanks for visiting my Patreon page. Patreon is a crowdfunding site with a unique model which is different from Kickstarter or IndieGogo. Rather than providing one-time support (toward a physical object, like a CD) you give ongoing monthly support. It is a direct artist-to-listener experience. With your funding, I can dedicate more time to writing and recording the new Black Tape For A Blue Girl album.

Since the 80s, I've been releasing ethereal, gothic, & darkAmbient music. The record business has changed dramatically from the peak era of Remnants of a deeper purity; new albums sell a fraction of what they used to. Although people listen to a lot of music these days, their favorite price point is FREE. It’s hard for an artist to make a living - or even afford to record an album for that matter - within a budget of “free.”

Making music costs money! Your contribution gives me a sustainable, reliable monthly income. This goes to pay my musicians a studio fee, repair my gear, buy new equipment, plane tickets, rent recording studio time, and the basic overhead I need to keep myself afloat so I can work less at my day job (America's premier darkwave/electronic label, Projekt Records) and dedicate more time to the studio.

I'm asking for your support to make this possible.

I launched this Patreon campaign in January 2015, and I have to tell you I’m amazed at how much music I’ve created this year. I attribute that to the mental freedom I’ve gained by knowing you have my back. I can knock off work early and go into the studio without fretting that I have to hurry back to the computer to deal with potential-income-generating Projekt-work. This feels great!

Yes, I’ve been making a lot of art. I created the As Lonely As Dave Bowman MONOLITH album (100 minutes of music). I’ve written about 25 new potential Blacktape songs (not all of them are complete nor will make it on the album). I’ve written lyrics for 12+ tracks, and I’ve just generally had more space to think, get inspired & write.

Your recurring monthly pledge of $2, $5, $10 or more gives me freedom

Patreon is interactive. Along with the music I give you each month, I post blogs about my progress where fellow patrons comment and then we shoot around ideas the music bring up.

You'll get exclusive All Access to Blacktape in the studio:
* regular blog posts with updates, bits of lyrics, ruminations, questions for you
* monthly Bandcamp-based updates with new songs
* songs you’ve heard before that have been revised with additional instruments
* tracks that otherwise would never be released on an album
* early mixes of songs from older albums
* behind-the-scenes videos
* live recordings
* and my updates in the activity feed (where we chat and you meet a community of other Blacktape fans)

I often get messages from patrons telling me they don't contribute to get the stuff! They're doing it because they love the music and want to support it and see that I make more of it. I’ve got to tell you, every time I read an email like that I smile, knowing you appreciate what I create and that you appreciate it enough to help it exist.

I’m really excited about crowdfunding because it provides a solution to the tricky question of how an artist can afford to make their work in the 21st century; at the same time it gives us a chance for a deeper connection.

To pledge, go to the upper left and enter a dollar amount. It’s a monthly charge, kind of like the way you support NPR or PBS.

Immerse yourself in Black Tape For A Blue Girl and help keep the music flowing. You’ll be a patron of my art! That is so cool of you.

Still not sure how Patreon works? Watch this one-minute video.

To be clear: Your Patreon contributions go toward my expenses. When it's time to release the new CD, I'll Kickstart to fund the manufacturing. Also, many of the songs you hear here first will be released to the public at a later date, though some will remain exclusive for you.

Q: I can only afford to contribute $2 a month. Will that really make a difference?
A: Yes, of course it will! It's not just your $2. Patreon adds your $2 with all the other people contributing each month. For example, I pay my bandmates $100 to come into the studio to record. If 50 people donate $2 each, that covers one studio session per month.

Q: I want to contribute, but this is one of those things that will have to wait til payday.

A: Patreon charges right after the first of the month, so you can join now and start enjoying the music immediately. Your first monthly charge will be in a few weeks.

Q: Do you have a schedule for a new album?

A: My optimistic goal is to have a new Black Tape For A Blue Girl album in the fall of 2015. That is a factor of how often I get into the studio and how quickly new lyrics come to me, once the music is created.

Q: What is your Cat’s name?
A: Her name is Harley. She's 19 years old! And laying on the desk between my arms as I type this.

Q: Tell me more about that new song in the video?
A: That's a new piece; a darkAmbient instrumental with some great viola from new band-member Grace! She's recorded three tracks so far. I look forward to getting back into the studio to work on more; your support will be part of that! Thanks.
