About Bloomers

‘Bloomers Magazine’ was founded in February 2018. Our initial premise was to be a bi-annual printed publication that discusses the work of emerging artists based in Ireland. We have since developed into an arts organisation that produces the bi-annually printed publication, delivers talks, events, screenings, Bloomers Zine Making Workshop, Bloomers Zine Stall and craft market.

Bloomers Magazine is a curated, theme specific, printed magazine that discusses the work of emerging female artists based in Ireland, framing their work in a critical context. It also includes interviews and other written creative responses to their work from writers emerging on to Ireland literary scene.

Each issue released by Bloomers benchmarks it’s growth as a project and development into an arts organisation with national status that promotes art made by women in Ireland and feminist values. The team has grown from one to five in the last two years, inviting a professional designer and establishing core roles needed to support the project and its growth. The scale of the launch events, partnerships and overall quality of the printed publication has increased steadily since Bloomers was initiated as a result.

In February 2019 we launched Bloomers Zine Stall which includes over 100 independent zines and publications, the majority of which are produced by artists and writers based in Ireland. We have brought Bloomers Zine Stall and delivered zine making workshops to festivals such as Kfest, Quarter Block Party and Cork Culture Night. In November 2019 we held a launch for Issue 04 : "Out of Body" in Crawford Gallery, Cork, in the form of a screening and discussion event, inviting several emerging female artists based in Ireland to speak about their work.

Issue 05 : "Where we once lived, When myths collided" is coming this May 2020. The title is taken from the poem "Love" written in 1993 by the late Eavan Boland and features on the Leaving Certificate Syllabus. The Issue is a collection of visual art and text documenting how a number of emerging female artists based in Ireland are responding to and reclaiming mythological themes.

Bloomers aim is to discuss and support emerging female artists based in Ireland, in a number of ways that are grounded in providing a platform where they can learn about one another and be learned about by the public - to create a world where their ideas shape our shared cultural narrative.
