Hi! I'm Ebony Darkness Dementia Way, and most people think I look like both Amy Lee AND Gerard Wa-
Sorry, folks, I've been informed that I am not in fact Ebony Darkness Dementia Way, and this is my Patreon. I'm also not Commander Shepard, but if you are, I'd love to hear I have your favorite store on the Citadel. Anyway, there's a long story in this post; if you just want the short bit about what you get out of pledging (or don't), skip down to Why Pledge? Why Not Pledge? Why Am I Holding This Skull and Monologuing At It?

NOTE: I run a free Discord server called Scumtag, modeled on the Mos Eisley Cantina of Star Wars, but with less bands that literally play "j*zz". You can check it out if you like, and pledging guarantees you a special channel role!

OTHER NOTE: One thing this Patreon supports is the social justice/alt-academic centric blog project I'm working on, located at sjw.land. As Han says, it doesn't look like much - but you can help by applying to be a writer. In fact, if you write for SJW.Land, I'd be happy to provide certain Patron perks like emails or personal web hosting without pledging.

The Twisted Tale of Bootleg Girl: Moonshine, Illegal Concerts, and Infiltrating Anime Cons
In way of a long-winded introduction, because I've got one of them humanities Ph.D.s and that's how we do things, I'm going to ask you to hop in my cheap knockoff American model T.A.R.D.I.S. with me and take a brief hop back in time: specifically, to the passage of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution. Rightfully hailed as a major milestone for women's rights in America, it's not quite right to describe it - as many people, including feminist scholars, often do - as the triumph of "woman suffrage," often misspelled "women's suffrage." Many, many women of color were still disenfranchised because of their gender because of the horrific and messy intersections of race and gender in American culture. Despite this unfortunate fact, a massive new population of voters surged to the polls all at once, and there was no way that the American political status quo could hold. As a result of this, alcohol was made illegal.

You probably heard most of what I said above, perhaps with the icky truths about racism persisting despite the actions of white feminists deemphasized or even left out, in middle or high school. If you're anything like me, you probably wondered why the hell that happened.
 1. Get women the right to vote
 2. ???
 3. Profit?
 4. Ban all booze
But, of course, there was a causal reason: many of the newly enfranchised women voters were brutalized and harmed by their husbands while said husbands were intoxicated. In the desperate and sadly futile hope that cutting off the substance at its source would solve this problem, voters ushered in the Great Gatsby era by taking the unprecedented - and not since repeated - step of mandating that a law applying to U.S. citizens rather than to the U.S. government be written into the nation's Constitution. We all know it didn't last, and it probably wasn't comparatively fun while it did last, either.

But that leads me to my Internet name, Bootleg Girl. You could be forgiven for believing that it references a love for moonshine. Perhaps I distill my own vodka in my bathtub. (Nah, I'm begging for money for health insurance, I can't afford a bathtub!) I don't actually drink, personally, but even if I did like moonshine (I tried one of those "moonshine" branded drinks that's not real moonshine since it's legal to sell once, it was ok as distilled wheat in a jar goes) that's not where the name originates. Your second guess might be that I make illegal recordings of concerts. I have done this, on occasion (although the band knew it was happening, so I'm not sure how badass that makes me). But I was already known by the moniker at the time.

No, you see, I am known as the dreaded Bootleg Girl, Scourge of the Internets for one reason and one reason alone: about 5 years ago, shortly after coming out as a transgender woman, I described myself as a "gamer girl" to a man who was insisting there was no such thing. (This was 2013, before #GamerGate had technically begun, although in my research - which I discuss subsequently - I found it was already going on for most intents and purposes, and this harasser's actions were likely part of the burgeoning hate movement.) The man, who went by a screen name derived from transgender screenwriter/director sisters Lana and Lilly Wachowski, claimed that no women played video games for any reason other than to impress their boyfriends. I informed him, accurately at the time, that I was single and liked video games. Undoubtedly, Mr. RedPill** had read my profile and noted I was trans - I have never made a secret of this - and so he replied that I was "not a real girl, just bootleg."

I'd received anti-transgender harassment on social media before, so this wasn't really all that concerning. I had half expected he'd go that route as a dodge, and I had been prepared to follow up with examples of cis women who also game, because I like arguing. But his use of the term "bootleg" became almost fractally absurd and infuriating, and so here I am today, using the name "Bootleg Girl," a transphobic insult that I had the privilege to be only slightly bothered by, as a personal brand for self promotion.

The name fascinated me partly because it's super bad ass. I mean, most people who hate trans people just go out and say we're ugly and no one wants us, that we're mentally ill and need therapy, etc.. I do get, in a twisted way, why RedPill** would want to change that up, because he knows that the more aggressive among us often have defenses against that sort of thing. But, much like his use of a transgender filmmaking team's metaphor for gender transition as his own screen name, RedPill**'s use of "Bootleg Girl" "attacked" trans women by making us seem cool - bootleggers, maybe with tommy guns, or people smuggling hidden cassette tapes into Rolling Stone concerts. It was cool, he stole a trans metaphor, so I stole a transphobe metaphor.

But Bootleg is more than just an ironic appropriation of transphobia. It aligns with my personal philosophy in a number of ways. For instance:
 • I enjoy modded content and changes to expectations in discourse and narrative
 • I consider copyright to be a necessary evil at best, and release most (but not all) of my creative work under a Creative Commons CC0 license
 • I don't oppose authority, just as a bootlegger in the Roaring 20s might have willingly worked with a mafia boss - but I do despise legitimate, unable-to-be-challenged authority
I carry these values forward into all the content I create. Thanks, trolls!

Why Pledge? Why Not Pledge? Why Am I Holding This Skull and Monologuing At It?
Let's get down to cyber-brass cyber-tacks. Why should you give me your money? The easy and quick answer is I'm a creative trans lady and I've fallen on hard times, but there's a lot of us in that situation, because society is actively trying to kill trans, disabled, and mentally ill people. And I have far more ability to survive this purge than many - although I fear the resources I have may very well not be enough.

More to the point, Patreon isn't exactly a charity service - you're getting something from me. So, back to that mob boss metaphor, what do you get from doing Internet business with me?
Things You Get For Free, Even If You Don't Pledge
 • You can read my Twitter, @BootlegGirl, and the epic rants and kind of creepy Kylo Ren/Rey shipping it's filled with
 • You can read my blog posts, currently hosted here and on the site Medium but soon to move to my own hosting service
 • I will offer whatever emotional support I can to anyone in need, trans, cis, disabled, abled, etc.
 • You can read my dissertation on the alt-right, which I must warn you has extremely dense prose and some typos which are on-record forever through Texas A&M University's OakTrust Repository
 • Access to my Discord server
A note on these free things: I don't mean this as a threat or anything other than a statement of a harsh reality, but with my health insurance running out soon and other desperate financial measures kicking in, while I don't charge anyone for these things, without financial assistance I'm not sure how much longer I can keep doing them. As NPR put it incessantly during their radio pledge drives I listened to for hours as a preteen, it's sponsors like you that keep the lights on.

Things You Get for Pledging
Depending on tier you may receive:
 • Early samples of fiction and long-form nonfiction writing
 • Art samples not posted publicly
 • Discarded or incomplete projects
 • Influence on which projects I pursue next, and how
 • Web or marketing commissions
 • Special roles on my Discord server
 • Web hosting at sjwconspiracy dot website, bootleg dot wtf, and/or sjw dot land
 • Characters or scenes in games and/or fiction
Most of all, even the slightest pledge keeps me going.

Why You Shouldn't Pledge
I put this section in not in any sort of faux-honesty - I think I'm pretty awesome and deserve money. But I only feel I deserve your money if you can afford it. I know a great deal of transgender people and disabled people circulate our money around Patreon to help the slightly worse off. I won't turn down a donation, but I don't want anyone to put themselves into the kind of financial straits I'm in, or worse, to help me. I'm going to survive, no matter what.

If you do have the means to support an independent content creator, I believe I am going to accomplish great things. I'm just getting started, escaping the toxic web of academia (seriously, it's terrible) and pursuing creative interests that school burnt out of me. Will you help me, friend - with money or simply with your care?
