About

Hi, I’m Vanessa! I worked as a science educator for years and now spend far too much time on the internet. I make science videos on my YouTube channel, BrainCraft.

I aim to help you understand more about your brain, body and behaviour and how we can all navigate this weird world a little bit better.

I'm super chuffed you're considering supporting my work, so thank you! I promise you won't regret it. Please just lower your expectations up front so you're always really pleased with how I'm investing your $2.

I make 1-2 videos a month (usually two, unless I get ambitious and then the one video is particularly worth it). My videos are based in science and I want them to be useful for your everyday life – so we can all communicate better, be more thoughtful, understand emotions and personality and ourselves and so on.

// Why I need your help  🙏
It's hard to be a YouTuber. And an EduTuber at that. I really want to be financially sustainable – I continually stress about the future of my show, my income, my life, and the future of educational content online.

With your help, I can make sure to keep all the pieces moving successfully. I can pay my bills, hire freelancers, ensure regular uploads, work with new collaborators, and grow this community.

You'll notice that I rely on other sponsorships, ad revenue, merchandise sales and so on – Patreon is way more important as it's more stable income. So I can sleep, see my family, manage burnout, all that fun stuff. But mainly sleep.

// But why do you need to support me now?
Up until this point BrainCraft has been fully funded. The first four seasons of the show were also a PBS series, I've created two documentary series for Screen Australia on the channel and have had a bunch of short-term sponsors.

So I never asked for crowd-funding because (1) I was terrified to ask and (2) I felt like other creators needed it more than I did. It's crowded out here. Now I have no funding. It's really scary and I want to keep making videos.

// How does Patreon work?

When you sign up as a Patron of BrainCraft, you’ll choose how much to pledge each month. This is a recurring charge that grants you access to exclusive content (my feed, newsletter, and such). You can see the full list of rewards listed on the right of this page.

BONUS VLOG! I'll continue to refine my craft as the world's awkwardest vlogger and release a bonus monthly vlog, exclusive to Patreon. Like a Q&A meets travel vlog meets philosophical video musings.
