    About

Welcome to Brain Fertilizer, the Dead Mule School of Southern Literature’s podcast. The goal of this podcast is to celebrate the work of the creative folks who graciously contributed and continue to contribute to one of the longest-running online literary journals there is, The Dead Mule School of Southern Literature. My name is Virginia Lee and I am the official Voice of the Dead Mule. The Dead Mule's founder and editor-in-chief, Valerie MacEwan, and I have been talking about doing a podcast for several years. However, we didn’t get serious about it until recently.

The concept of the South is, to my mind, pretty fluid, but then my major in college was regional studies with an emphasis on the American South. MacEwan is also a regionalist who believes, “Everywhere is south of somewhere.” That’s what makes the Dead Mule so interesting and why creators from all over the world have been and are part of the Dead Mule family. During these podcasts, I’ll be reading all sorts of material, some older and some new. All will be from the Dead Mule. With about twenty-four years’ worth of editions from which to choose and new material every month at www.deadmule.com, I figure I can keep this podcast well-nourished for a right long time.

Your patronage is much appreciated. Goodies for patrons are still in development and will encompass everything from exclusive bedtime stories to merchandise to creating a custom something or other, such as an original acapella song or funny ad, that will be featured during a podcast just for you.

Thank you for your kind attention. You have a real blessed day.
