About Breaking the Glass Slipper
Once upon a time, Megan Leigh wanted an outlet for her many opinions on women in genre fiction, so decided to start a podcast. She knew that ranting monologues were not the best way to entice listeners, so reached out to two fellow writers to join her – Charlotte Bond and Lucy Hounsom – who could help cover the full range of speculative fiction.
With the three areas of specialty covered (Megan on science fiction, Charlotte on horror, and Lucy on fantasy), there was only one problem: what would we call ourselves? In the wee hours of the morning, Charlotte had a sudden flash of inspiration. She messaged her co-hosts, despite the hour, and Breaking the Glass Slipper was born.
Female authors have long been written out of genre history, while female characters tend to lack agency and depth if they appear at all. We want to change this. Breaking the Glass Slipper is a celebration of all the incredible women out there creating, and seeking representation within, fiction. From books to films, comics to games, we discuss all kinds of equality in genre fiction and dissect the ways in which we can improve diversity across the genres we love.
While this is absolutely a passion project for us – we get to talk about the things we love and people actually want to listen to us do it – producing the podcast takes a lot of time, effort, and money. And as we grow, our costs are only increasing.
This is why we need your support.
Our monthly costs currently break down as:
£25 hosting and distribution
£10 web hosting
£30 social media manager
£100 audience outreach
We also incur incidental costs for web design, audio production, hardware, software, and promotional materials.
Patreon allows us to support our production costs by asking fans to pay whatever they can afford. We don’t want to make our content gated for those who can’t afford it, so we simply ask those of you who love the show to chip in where and when you can.
Why support us?
We need to continue talking about women in genre fiction to increase and improve representation.
Currently, Breaking the Glass Slipper publishes two episodes a month, exploring feminist issues within science fiction, fantasy, and horror. We also regularly interview authors on our blog. But with your support, who knows what the future might hold.
