The Jimquisition: Performance Matters

Voice actors are doing what they do best and speaking up, uniting under the #PerformanceMatters group to demand better treatment in the game industry.

Ideally, the game industry should treat EVERYONE way better than it does, but in this case, it should come as no surprise that I most definitely stand with the voice actors and support them. Performance does matter, even as the industry sickeningly pretends it doesn't.

Soren Andersen Sorry Jim but i have to disagree on this one. Sure we can all agree that voice actors should be treated fairly and that they often offer valuable contributions to games, but thats not really what this is about. This is about actors getting special treatment over the rest of the dev team. Voice talent is hired on contract basis – not as full time employees, and once they have fulfilled their job they dont have to worry about getting canned or the studio shutting down etc. Their are not working for years and years on something that might not turn out in the end and dont have to suffer with that amount of pressure and stress that a regular dev in a studio is under (trust me, ive been there and done that). Working in games can be great but its also hard as fuck and you never know whats actually going on or how things are gonna pan out. Voice actors can swoop in and do the job and get out without most of that grief. Should they be entitled to a bonus for an entire project, after a month or less of recording because they have a strong union? And dont get me started on how non-union devs cant keep lines recorded early on in the process in the final game because of union restrictions. This practice is actively hindering game development and causing further grief. Yes im sure that you can find examples of voice actors being treated unfairly but giving them a mandatory bonus wont fix that. Plenty of regular devs are getting the shaft too. This is a misguided campaign and you should enlighten rather than jump on band wagons. Keep it up regardless!

That James Perry As someone working in the game industry, this rings very true. There's a lot of work for voice actors to take on, even while working on multiple projects (And even across mediums). But I didn't have the time or energy to bounce around on different game projects while doing contract work myself. Hell, if I even tried to do something on my own, I had to make sure that the project was started before my start date at a company and wouldn't conflict with my employment at the time as a competing product. However, if a project fails I could've been out of a job. If it succeeds, I saw nothing extra. Maybe some cake on a Friday and some small glasses of champagne. The only bonuses handed out to the employees I've worked with and myself were for recognition of the extra dedication to the team. Spending extra hours to wrap up a feature, taking on more responsibility than my job description states. I understand the concern, but let's not shirk the devs outright. Are voice actors the very paramount of examples we should be discussing here?

Okay, who DIDN'T expect another Konami episode with the crap it's pulled this past week?

Today, we discuss the company's sleazy PES shenanigans, the ridiculous DLC coming to Metal Gear Solid V, and explain why Konami sodding off out of "AAA" development forever wouldn't be a bad thing.

Benjamin Stannard Jim let me tell you a story. I live in Japan. Japan is a deep and sexiest country. Example the other day I was watching the news on NHK. NHK is like the BBC. The report was presented by a young girl climbing up a mountain. Where do you think the camera focused on while she walked up the mountain? That is right, on her arse for 10 seconds. I said to my wife that is a bit much. She said, "What? What is wrong with that?"

Hideo makes awesome games but his stories are crap filled with great bits of interesting information. But they are 90% crap. I want to add that if you find Quiet sexy that is weird. Her attention seeking movement is not sexy in the slightest. It screams desperate for attention. Women who behave like Quiet are usually emotionally unbalanced and are seeking love. But hey...

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided has given us one of the most grotesque pre-order schemes in "AAA" history. Its "Augment Your Pre-order" plan is a blight on the industry, and the worst part is that it's just another development in a long and sad story.

Pre-order culture is the worst. It seeps into everything. It needs to be sucked out.

Steven White Don't you miss when you could preorder as god intended; out of convenience (for the record, I preorder via Amazon) for stuff you were pretty damn positive you'd get in the first place OR a limited release things like something from Natsume? Solomon Mars prerecorded in game chatter is really odd because it's often so humorless. most of what I ever hear are people being silly and then laughing occasionally at a joke or just commenting on something they saw in the game world that was odd. even if they did that a little it would feel less like an audio uncanny valley than it does.

If you've followed this industry's buzzword-infused gibberish for a while, you'll like have heard of the term, "Games-as-a-service." It's about turning games from one-time purchases into ongoing experiences, usually with an injection of microtransactions or DLC.

It's also totally dishonest, justifying all manner of shoddy business practices, broken launches, and con jobs.

Recently, two games came out that represent the ideal of the "service" a lot more than any product to have actively claimed the term. Let's examine what they do, and why they humiliate the industry! Oh my Gods!

Steam has finally delivered some basic customer service in the form of a refund policy. This is a good thing. A damn good thing. A long overdue, much needed, very good thing.

Naturally, this means there's a debate about it with some people saying it's a bad thing. A number of developers and even games press pundits have criticized the move.

They're basically wrong, but let's look at the benefits and concerns anyway, because when Steam's involved, it always pays to at least think of how it could go tits up.

James McGhie My problem with the 'less than two hours of play' thing is that it doesn't account for game such as Star Wars: The Old Republic that are fine for the first three hours or so but then you hit a point where the game consistently crashes. Because it happens after the two hour point am I just not entitled to a refund? Or what about Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodline which has that game breaking crash right near the end of the game? Also I find it very odd to see the Bash Street Kids and Lord Snooty showing up in YouTube videos in 2015.

I couldn't get back my money even partially, because I've played ep 1 more than 2 hours. (I left the game running ... ) In other words, it is being applied in the strictest way possible. On an side note, your audio could use some polishing and I happen to have built a small studio for a project, so if you want some help with it, PM me.

Amiibo can go take a running jump at this point. After the abysmal mess that was Wave 4's launch, and the continued benefit to scumbags that these things provide, I'm done.

Splatoon was the final straw - a great game in its own right, with amiibo functionality that genuinely justifies the "glorified DLC" accusations I've defended amiibo from in the past. It's kind of worse though - because it's DLC for only a lucky few.

And I want my power armor, damn it!

Steven White Hmm, you rant/call shenanigans on Nintendo's amiibo game and Chibi-Robo gets an amiibo packed in with the physical game? Is this a sign of things to come? Have the heavens granted The Jim another win? ...Or is it a sad ploy to draw people to a less popular character in their stable. It was called a "bundle" which means there may be bundle-less copies that will likely be a LOT more available.

Davey Son The scarcity of amiibo in the U.S. and the U.K. is really mindboggling to me. Every store you walk into here in Australia has had an abundant amount of them. Not just with the Splatoon figures, but with a whole bunch of the Smash Bros. ones as well. Did they accidentally ship the stock that was meant to go to other countries here? It's all a little strange.

The Jimquisition 29: The Asset Flip

We've talked about "stock Unity assets" on this show before, but what does that mean? Well, it's time to look at the ramifications of asset flipping - buying pre-made characters, objects, and environments from other developers, and re-selling them with no alterations. From whole asset packs resold under new names, to Unreal Engine tutorials masquerading as games, asset flipping comes in several flavors, and none of them taste good. Grab a fork and dig in, why don't you?

Michael Scherchen I don't understand why Valve - who MUST be aware of all this don't seem to care that all this carry-on is shitting all over Steam's reputation as a platform. I remember when Steam used to be a prestigious store for games - very hard to get on to - now it just feels like a repository for dogshit. The only thing I can think is that the money Valve make from Steam offsets any damage these awful games are doing to Steam's reputation. Steam used to be John Lewis - it now feels like it's including the piss-poor-cousin of the 50p and £1+ shop! Thank god for you Jim Fucking Sterling Son for highlighting this bullshit again and again - I just wish Valve would do something about this - hire a couple of people to act as gatekeepers to the obvious trash - can't be that difficult surely? I'd LOVE to actually hear GabeN respond to this video...how can he defend this crap?

The age of the re-animators is here. Game genres previously thought "dead" by so-called AAA publishers are getting their revival thanks to the crowdfunding efforts of such projects as Pillars of Eternity, Yooka-Laylee, and Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. The big-budget world has made the message quite clear - it neither wants nor needs creative, passionate developers anymore. It would rather clone Clash of Clans and Call of Duty all day. Fine. Creative, passionate developers don't need the big-budget world either. As sad as this year's been for games, we're still in a potential golden age.

Ingmar Kofler hey Jim usually i pretty much agree with the majority of things you state but I think in regards to These Kickstarters I feel you are off the mark. These guys still have huge backing from the old cadre of Publishers they are essentially useing Kickstarter for a different way of getting pre-sales. http://www.polygon.com/2015/5/19/8624665/big-indie-kickstarters-are-killing-actual-indies

Capcom, Konami, Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, Activison... there's no shortage of "AAA" publishers to rail on for their naughty behavior. One company often gets overlooked, however, and it's one of the naughtiest - Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment. Following the announcement of Batman: Arkham Knight's $40 season pass, we take a look at some of WB's cheekiest stunts - by no means an exhaustive list, but a great look at its feeding of pre-order culture, DLC saturation, and general lack of customer care.

Yeah, that's right, you get TWO Jimquisitions this week! We can't not have a nice chat about old nemesis Konami, perhaps the most embarrassing major publisher in the so-called "AAA" space. This episode mostly retells the stunning tale of Konami's greatest failures, but adds in some "I told you so" sentiments for good measure. Also, we look at the famous blacklist I received for my original Konami video. Looking at it all, it's not surprising Konami seems to be alienating Hideo Kojima and canceled Silent Hills. Konami is, after all, Konami... and it's not like they can blacklist me twice!

Dallen Steinke Jr Kinda reminds me of a flash video on Newgrounds back in 2004 called "Decline Of Video Gaming 2" They had a character for Konami that I think you'd agree, THAT'S KONAMI!

Mitchell Hicks I imagine their other divisions must be run with some sort of fiscal and PR intelligence, considering their success. I don't understand why they apparently let crazy people run their games division.
