Hey there! I’m Eric Grey, MS, LAc – founder, writer and teacher here at Chinese Medicine Central (CMC) and the creator of the Whole Life Practitioner podcast. I live in Astoria, OR on the beautiful West Coast of the US.

I started the website in 2006 as a new student at National University of Natural Medicine (NUNM, then NCNM). I wanted to use blogging technology as a way to keep a diary of my explorations in the medicine as it was all so new to me. Over time, I found that people enjoyed reading what I wrote, and the engagement that came from those experiences really energized me as a student. I even created a course to offer online about Chinese Herbs, and became enamored of the idea of learning, teaching and connecting online.

After graduating and starting my clinical practice with my wife, I was very fortunate to also be asked to teach at my alma mater. Thus, the REAL learning began. The more I practiced and taught, the more I fell in love with my profession. Unfortunately, it also meant I didn't have much time to contribute to the site. I've had several great folks along the way help me keep the site alive, adding content when my energy and time was simply too thin.

Now, 10 years into my clinical practice and with two clinics, I'm stepping away from University teaching and embracing engagement with the worldwide community of practitioners again. My goal, right now, is to step into research and creation of excellent content for acupuncturists, to create courses and educational materials that give practitioners what they need to truly succeed, and eventually to create a one-of-a-kind annual community event for acupuncturists in 2020.

The site, of course, costs money to run. But the main expense of CMC is, and has always been, the time and energy it takes to write in-depth content. This is especially true of multi-media content like the new podcast. While I do have courses at the site, and hope to increase their number and quality, the reality is that what I offer isn't going to be right for everyone. And that's why I've created this Patreon page. To give readers and listeners a way to contribute to the work being done at CMC, so I can ensure it keeps happening.

My 3 year roadmap

I have ambitious plans for the site over the next 3 years.

  • Year 1 (2019) - Getting a base of support and cleaning house. In the next three years, I'd like to add a database of free content for classically minded practitioners, expand our course and PDF ebook offerings, and do a lot of back end technical work to the site to make it more usable. Above all, I want to try to reach as many folks as possible with our free, relevant content. I've already got the wonderful Joshua Park, DSOM offering up an excellent series on the Tangye jing, and he will doubtless have plenty more to offer in the future.
  • Year 2 (2020) - Expanding the team and our first event. As financial support grows, I want to start to pay young, promising scholars and business owners in our fields to create content that they specialize in, adding to the excellent information you can receive from the site. At the same time, I want to do a pilot event combining art, culture, medicine, business and more, all for acupuncturists seeking to find deep success in their acupuncture careers.
  • Year 3 (2021) - Advanced training and partnering with organizations. In the third year, I'll keep refining the event idea, learning from successes and failures at the pilot event. I'll also hope to add more advanced trainings and materials based on what I learn from folks over the 3 years, so that the site becomes your favorite place for free and paid content that supports your goals as an East Asian medicine practitioner. This will include partnering with like-minded organizations to expand reach & improve offerings.

How your support will be used

It's a big deal to contribute money to who is likely a complete stranger. :) How will the money be used?

  • Paying for the nuts and bolts of the site including hosting and basic services
  • Contributing to the redesign, esthetic improvement and ongoing development of the site
  • Paying all writers and teachers a fair wage for their work
  • Saving for important expenses related to the event I am planning including site costs, marketing costs and paying performers and other contributors for their time

If you've read this far, I hope you'll contribute. Even a small amount helps. Thank you!

Goals
$0 of $2,000 per month
This is the baseline cost I need to keep the site up, as well as developing and growing it at a reasonable pace. At this point, it would pay for the site expenses (around $400/monthly) and 40 monthly hours of labor at a rate of $50 hour.
