Welcome to my Patreon, lovely people!

I'm changing the focus of my posts to the history of LGBTQ+ science fiction, fantasy and horror, with the eventual goal of pulling together a book on the subject. After patrons have had a chance to read the posts, they will be made public here and crossposted to my "Out of the Past" column at Queer Sci Fi. Because I'm still gearing up, there will still be intermittent resource lists, just like last year. The levels will remain as is for the foreseeable future and proceeds will be still be donated to nonprofits unless my financial situation changes.

What kind of recommendation lists and why do you want them?
The short answer: because I’m good at collecting information and have an encyclopedic knowledge of an enormous amount of stuff. Also, my search and research skills are excellent and I’m very straight-forward about my biases and experiences so you can make your own calls on what works for you.

What do I get out of it? I plan to donate what you give me so I get to support cool organizations  and creators and I get to work on a nonfiction book that I've been contemplating for the last several years. Your lovely and much appreciated support will help me prioritize work on this. So I get your money for donations/supporting other creators and you get to read a bunch of stuff about various aspects of queer science fiction, fantasy and horror. And I get to keep to a schedule.

Nonprofits I hope to donate to in 2018:
Planned Parenthood
Southern Poverty Law Center
NAACP
ADAPT
Ultraviolet
National Center for Lesbian Rights
National Center for Transgender Equality
The Nature Conservancy
Rainbow Railroad
Center for Biological Diversity
Tiers

  • Resource lists will be 5-6 items long
  • Posts of either type will include descriptions and contact/website/followup info

  • You get that month's essay and any lists that I create.

All the things!
  • You get any lists I create that month
  • You get the option to request specific topics

You get everything noted above, plus sections of the book as it comes into being (bearing in mind that this will not be instantaneous and may take some time). Goals
92% complete
Where will your money go? My plan is that any Patreon payments will get rolled up into my monthly nonprofit donations. (Patrons will be notified of any changes) and I will pick one cause per month (suggestions are welcome).

Some organizations I’d like to commit to donating to for the remainder of 2017:
Southern Poverty Law Center – A legal organization that is the Captain America/Ms. Marvel of fighting for civil rights and confronting racism in its many forms.
National Center for Lesbian Rights – legal organization focused on immigration, jobs, housing and related issues for queer women and nonbinary folks
Planned Parenthood – speaks for itself. Cancer screenings, birth control, miscellaneous health stuff including STD testing, reproductive health
Nature Conservancy – environmental organization that funds research, buys endangered lands, does educational projects and provides funds for rebuilding coral reefs and cleaning up rivers and so forth
Minnesota Neighborhoods Organizing for Change – local organization fighting racism in housing, working for fair wages and various civil rights issues with a focus on the needs of communities of color.
Center for Biological Diversity – legal support for environmental efforts, fighting polluters, etc.
Ultraviolet – online organization mobilizing on social media to confront sexism, homophobia and racism, amongst other things
American Refugee Committee – refugee resettlement and support in Minnesota (MN is one of the states that takes in the largest number of refugees) and elsewhere around the globe.
