About the Whakapara Ten
There are ten adult Hereford/freisian cows, seven years old this year, bred for meat market and due for processing five years ago. They have developed a family community bond due to their years together. The were sold with the house 5years ago and when the new owner took them on she decided not to send them to slaughter and that they would stay. However because they were originally only meant to be on the property for a short time the pasture there is insufficient for them and requires supplementing every day with hay. The wonderful lady that has saved them needs support.

There is Bossy, and Baby Rose. Bossy is just that, everyone lets her have first grass, hay etc. She is the quiet leader who is strongly bossy, if /when they forget. Baby Rose was the runt of them all and for first few years was always on catch up, always under weight. She's assertive now and always first to look for me to get up and put out the hay. Calls me if up late. Bossy and others very tolerant of her. She has flowered like a little rose.
There is Spot She's called Spot because of spot patch on face next to left ear. Woody Tongue is called that because she needed treatment for woody tongue when she was young. Couldn't chew and swallow anything. Rather scary time with her.
Rocky is Rocky because of her horn stumps and she seems fighty, but she's not really, probably as result being dehorned as calf. Beauty is called that because she is the most gentle, patient and beautiful inside and out.
Bossy Sister is called that because she is bossy like her sister. Puppy Paw, because she has paw print marking on her left ear.
Rosie is most forthright and probably had lots hands on with people as calf. She is bit of mischief and ALWAYS stretches the boundaries, she's pretty confident in the world (around people). Lastly, Tossy, tosses her head and is bit stroppy. She is funny with it.
They all have special relationships with each other, some closer than others, overall reliant on each other, not happy when separated.

About Leroy
At 2 days old he was found in a paddock alone , his ear had been nibbled at and without his mum. She had either abandoned him or she had died. No-one was sure. We were contacted and we found a wonderful family to foster him , love him and bottle feed him. The 2 children loved him like a baby brother and then he was strong enough to come here and join his family.
Likes hanging out with his close friends Maisy-Jane and Sammy.

A Clydesdale with a sway back ,Meyer was going on the "dog food truck" if we couldn't re-home her. Straight away she needed a number of professionals to go and treat her (equine dentist, Farrier and vet) We then found her an amazing caring and knowledgeable home that loves her. She will spend the rest of her days in peace with other horses for company.
Likes being brushed and hanging out with her new horse family.

About Peppa, Lady, Ruby
These 3 gorgeous girls (3 generations)were found homeless via a number of heartbreaking situations. We were called and we spent the day traveling to pick them up and brought them back to here. We made a a few adjustments to our trailer so they would be comfortable and built a safe and easy ramp to load them (thanks to my hubby). After a  couple of month here we took them to their new home where they have been living for a couple of years now.
Likes their shelter made from a childs playhouse and exploring their vast grounds.

About Canterbury Tails Animal Rescue

"Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does"-William James

I'm passionate about animals and education. As we rescue more and more animals I'm concentrating on education and telling the stories of the animals we've met.
Educating the public is the focus as I believe it is the key to reducing the suffering of animals. This involves public speaking, attending local events /expos and expanding my website.
This is all in addition to the work we do with the animals we already have in our care here at Canterbury Tails.  We are a registered charity #CC58280 so you donations are tax deductible as well as our finances being transparent. I need your support and I look forward to sharing and connecting with you through this journey.

Every animal is an individual that deserves kindness and compassion. Canterbury Tails Animal Rescue was founded in New Zealand in 2017.  We are a small family run animal rescue  in the South Island of New Zealand which is also a sanctuary to a small group of animals. We share the stories of the animals we meet to to create awareness and show people that these "pets" are no different than the animals people eat.

Our small size is an advantage as we don't have staff or land costs to contend with which means donations go 100% to helping animals. To housing, food, welfare, transport and advertising to find new homes.
In 2017, we were contacted by a friend who was aware of a pet pig who needed a new home. Poro (now Paul) a much-loved pet pig had outgrown his home but there were very few options for this beautiful boy. It is then that we realized how at risk these unconventional pets are. Paul now lives with us. Since then we've taken in "pets' as well as animals destined for the freezer and found safe forever homes for many others.
The only difference between an animal that is cuddled and one who is farmed is the human in their lives.
Every animal is an individual.
