About Cara Bean

Hello and welcome to my Patreon page! I’m Cara Bean, a cartoonist and art educator from Massachusetts. I’ve been making comics for over ten years, and my current project is a non-fiction book about mental health for kids.

I post about my process here on Patreon, but if you want to get an immediate feel for my work, please check out Snake Pit and Let’s Talk About It: A Graphic Guide to Mental Health. Also, feel free to check out my website carabeancomics.com, Twitter @carabeancomics, Instagram @CaraBeanComics, and Youtube channel @CaraBeanComics.

<<=======================================>>

This journey began when I left my position as a high school art teacher so that I could devote all of my attention to making a book that I didn't see in the world. There were resources to be sure, though fiction outnumbered the non-fiction, the non-fiction was aimed mainly at adults, and everything was always text-heavy, even work that had graphic components. I wasn’t seeing a ton of what would have resonated with me as a young, visual-minded person.

The topic of mental health interests me because I have lived with my own anxiety and periods of depression. I have also been impacted as a teacher witnessing the emotional landscape of my students, especially the ones who opened up to me over the years. I think it’s important to use comics to reach these kids before they get to high school, maybe even before middle school. It seems kids are being confronted with really heavy thoughts and emotions at younger and younger ages. My aim is to create honest and visually appealing comics for a young audience that will address and explain common disorders such as anxiety, depression, and suicide, along with positive and negative coping mechanisms.

If you are suffering now, please know that there are resources available to you, counselors to talk to, and people who care about you. You will get through this.
