About Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg

It Started With a Dream

It started with a dream: I was walking into a forest one autumn night. With each step I took, the path in front of me lit up a few inches more so I could see where next to step. At first, I was thrilled with this walking magic trick, but soon got lost. Then I realized I could find my way by aiming toward where I was called: leaving behind the day job (33 years of teaching at the college level) and heading into the beloved wild to write and facilitate others creating what helps us feel more alive. But this is also a dream about writing as a way of finding our path, which I love sharing with others, including my patrons through weekly Care Packages for a Creative Life.

Who I Am & What I Do

Since I wrote my first poem in 1973, I've followed the path of poetry, which has helped me and many others I've worked with discover and recover greater meaning, clarity, and joy.

For over 30 years as a community writing facilitator and college teacher, I've witnessed what can happen when we write what wakes us and when we hear each another's truest words. This led me to found Transformation Language Arts (TLA), an emerging field about writing, storytelling, theater, and other arts for social and personal transformation. I launched TLA at Goddard College, where I taught for 23 years, helped start the TLA Network and its annual Power of Words conference, and facilitated hundreds of workshops for communities throughout the continent.

Every step and page along the way, I’ve seen how writing and speaking our truths can change our lives for the better. Language, according to poet laureate of the cosmos William Stafford, “can do what it can't say,” especially in community. Here's how all this translates into my work:

  • I write – poetry, memoir, non-fiction, fiction, and songs – and I had the honor of serving as the 2009-13 Kansas Poet Laureate.
  • I facilitate creative workshops, retreats, and trainings for people facing transitions and challenges, seeking their bravest voice, leaping into their right livelihood, and celebrating this world.
  • I teach writing as a process, craft, and practice that helps us come home to who we are.
  • I collaborate (because two heads are better than one) with Kathryn Lorenzen on Your Right Livelihood, Kelley Hunt on Brave Voice, and Joy Roulier Sawyer on the Art of Facilitation.
  • I love, mourn, and fight for this beautiful world through writing. More on all this at my website.

Why Patreon?

Patreon is a way for creators and entrepreneurs to raise funds for new work or general support. In exchange for contributions, patrons get special gifts and the satisfaction of knowing they’re supporting people doing good work.

It fits my values and ethics to support artists, healers, community leaders, entrepreneurs, and others doing the work of Tikkun Olam, the Hebrew term for mending the broken world. Now I’m asking for your help, each contribution lighting the path ahead just a little more so that I can:

  • Complete my new memoir, The Magic Eye, the entwined stories of saving a life (my own through an eye cancer odyssey) and land (a family farm my husband and I dreamed of and worked toward saving for 35 years).
  • Create workshops and writing to help us better connect with our spirit, the living earth, and each other.
  • Grow Transformative Language Arts in schools, colleges, groups and businesses to help better communicate with each other.
  • Continue my podcast on finding, telling, and witnessing our stories for greater healing, resilience, and unity.

Promises and Appreciations

What you give, even if it's at the lower end of the perks pool, enables me to focus more on the big work ahead calling my name. I'm abundantly appreciative to you, and I'm happy to share a weekly Creativity Care Package, a special writing guide written just for patrons, special perks, and occasional surprises. Additionally, patrons receive discounts on some of our workshops, classes, retreats, and books. And every so often, we'll have a patron-only giveaway of a free book, coaching session, or other treat.

Poetry Improvisation Parties: Every time I reach $100 more in patrons, I will post a video of me making up a poem aloud with words you’ll be invited to send me.

My promise to you is to carry my gratitude for your support into all I create. I will stay in touch, deliver on my perks, and do my best work possible.

Completion of My Memoir, The Magic Eye

With enough support, I'll be able to devote even more time to completing my memoir about saving a life and a parcel of land while also exploring healing and homecoming in an ailing world. All patrons will receive advance access to the introduction and, when published, a special discount on buying the book.
