It Started With a Dream

It started with a dream: I was walking into a forest one autumn night. With each step I took, the path in front of me lit up a few inches more so I could see where next to step. At first, I was thrilled with this walking magic trick, but after a while, I got lost and scared. Then I realized I could find my way by aiming toward where I was called: leaving behind the day job and heading into the beloved wild to write and facilitate others creating what helps us feel more alive. After 33 years of teaching on the college level, it was time to take this show on the road.

Who I Am & What I Do

Since I wrote my first poem in 1973, I've followed the path of poetry, which has helped me and many others I've worked with discover and recover greater meaning, clarity, and joy.

For over 30 years as a community writing facilitator and college teacher, I've witnessed what can happen when we write what wakes us and when we hear each another's truest words. This led me to found Transformation Language Arts (TLA), an emerging field about writing, storytelling, theater, and other arts for social and personal transformation. I launched TLA at Goddard College, where I taught for 23 years, helped start the TLA Network and its annual Power of Words conference, and facilitated hundreds of workshops and classes for many communities.

Every step and page along the way, I’ve seen how writing and speaking our truths can change our lives for the better. Language, according to poet laureate of the cosmos William Stafford, “can do what it can't say,” especially in community. Here's how all this translates into my work:

  • I write – poetry, memoir, non-fiction, fiction, and songs – and I had the honor of serving as the 2009-13 Kansas Poet Laureate.
  • I facilitate creative workshops, retreats, and trainings for people facing transitions and challenges, seeking their bravest voice, leaping into their right livelihood, and celebrating this world.
  • I teach writing as a process, craft, and practice that helps us come home to who we are.
  • I lead community programs to help us build resilience and make community.
  • I love, mourn, and fight for this beautiful world through writing.

Why Patreon?

Patreon is a way for creators and entrepreneurs to raise funds for new work or general support. In exchange for contributions, patrons get special gifts and the satisfaction of knowing they’re supporting people doing good work.

It fits my values and ethics to support artists, healers, community leaders, entrepreneurs, and others doing the work of Tikkun Olam, the Hebrew term for mending the broken world. Now I’m asking for your help, each contribution lighting the path ahead just a little more so that I can:

  • Start a podcast on finding, telling, and witnessing our stories for greater healing, resilience, and unity.
  • Write a book on how writing and witnessing our truest stories can help us heal the heart of the world.
  • Create workshops and writing to help us better connect with the living earth and each other.
  • Grow Transformative Language Arts in schools, colleges, groups and businesses to help better communicate with each other.

Promises and Appreciations

What you give, even if it's at the lower end of the perks pool, enables me to focus more on the big work ahead calling my name. I'm abundantly appreciative to you, and I'm happy to share some cool perks, including a beautifully printed card with my poem “In Gratitude” with one of Stephen Locke’s spectacular weather photos, a blog post I’ll write on a topic of your choice, or a poem I'll write for you or a loved one.

Poetry Improvisation Parties: Every time I reach $100 more in patrons, I will post a video of me making up a poem aloud with words you’ll be invited to send me.

You’ll also receive weekly posts – writing, videos, short podcasts, or inspiring links you can click on to spark your own creativity. Patrons will also have first access to all future podcasts, publications, workshops, retreats, and other projects coming to fruition.

My promise to you is to carry my gratitude for your support into all I create. I will stay in touch, deliver on my perks, and do my best work possible.

Thank you for visiting my Patreon account and listening to my story. I’m grateful for your time and attention, and I wish you clarity, courage, and creativity in finding and living your own truest story.

Thanks also to the writers from Turning Point: The Center for Hope & Healing, who happily posed for this photo, to Stephen Locke for my photo on the left, and to Dave Leiker for my photo on the right. I'm surrounded by magic.
