I think the glass industry is amazing and so underrated. If you are in the trade, you know what it is like to be asked what you do for a living and respond, “I’m a glazier” just to have the person ask, “what’s a glazier?” Not just occasionally, but most of the time. It’s funny! What what we do is quite incredible. We work with a material that is unforgiving; fragile, heavy, and sharp. It is the craft that is undoubtedly the most highly visible in the construction industry. If we are talking about windows, people look through them. If mirrors, people look into them. In whatever instance glass is used, it is partly for the sheer beauty of the material. To be successful as a glazier, a person must be able lift a lot and be gentile enough not to damage anything. Not just the materials we handle, but the work of other trades that surround the work we do. A strong back, a keen eye, a soft touch, a good sense of humor, determination, problem solving, and staying cool in a bind.

My dad was a glazier. He was a leader in his part of the industry. He was the Apprenticeship Coordinator in Las Vegas for many years. He was always involved in Union activities in one way or another and served as Vice President of Local 2001 for some time. My older brother, Greg Phillips, is also an authority in the glass field. He is probably the most highly trained glazier I have ever known, certified in pretty much everything! He has been a teacher in the apprenticeship program in Northern California, and currently works as the safety superintendent at one of the larger glass companies in the Bay Area. I am somewhat driven by my connection to the glass business. To me it is more than a job. As a kid, I never wanted to grow up to be a glazier… After trying a lot of other things, I decided to give the glass business a shot. I became an apprentice in my early 20s and went on to a career that has lasted about 30 years so far.

I have to say that the most important thing in my life is my relationship with Jesus Christ. I’m not a “preachy” person... I find what works for me, lead by example, and share my experiences. Many things about me have evolved over the years. I’ve changed my mind about a lot of things. I’m open to new ideas. One thing that has remained constant is my faith in God. It’s important to know this about me, because everything that I care about can be traced back to my faith. It’s not something that I talk about constantly, but it will definitely come up from time to time.

I have overcome obstacles. I’ve had many life experiences, and my perspective about things has changed radically. Especially when it comes to human relationships. I traveled the country as a teen-ager, living in several different states. I was homeless for a couple of years. I have worked as a chef, a musician, a web designer, a pastor, an elevator consultant, a master craftsman, among other things. I have been running a company for the past 14 years, and am in the process of starting a new career as a Product Developer. I am the inventor of several utilities that are used in the glass industry. I have patents pending, and products that I’m working on now. There are some ideas that I have released with no intellectual property at all, that are now in the public domain.

What I do for work and what I do for love are beginning to merge. I have come to realize some important truths about life, work, and compensation. I used to think that I was being paid by the hour, because that was the way my employers used to calculate my wages. Even as a business owner I used to figure the amount of money I was earning and divide that by hours worked. It was a mistake. It caused me to make inaccurate decisions concerning the actual value of what I was doing. I know now that my rewards in life consist of more than the money that I earn.

As a patron you will have access to my instructional videos that will indeed teach you “How to Install High-end Heavy Glass Shower Enclosures Like a Boss!” I will share my secrets about starting a business in a challenging environment, delivering excellent customer service, and establishing an excellent reputation in my industry. I will also be sharing my philosophy of having a positive mental attitude, and talking about the things I am reading and discovering. I am very interested to hear your ideas and find out what you think is valuable. I have a lot of experience listening to people and using what I learn to provide excellent service. This is going to be a lot of fun! Thanks for coming along.
