Feel disconnected from your stories, your history and your culture?  We did.  So we created the user-driven Canadian Motion Picture Database.

Do you have a favourite Canadian film?

How about a favourite Canadian TV show or web series?

Do you know where to watch it?  Do you know where to find more information?

One of the biggest problems facing the Canadian film, television and digital industries is audience access to and awareness of Canadian made productions.  Cinema Canadiana has developed the Canadian Motion Picture Database, an online space devoted to all Canadian film, video and digital motion picture projects of any length, animated or live action that pushes people towards areas of the Internet with articles, interviews and, most importantly, where to watch the project itself.

As you can see from our Milestones (scroll down to the bottom), we have a number of ambitious plans to help promote the industries, the people who work on them and the projects they create.  Can you imagine how cool an interactive map of where projects were shot and where they are set would be?  Finally you will know that you were right when you recognized a setting in a favorite film, whether Canadian or not!

As we achieve milestones, we will be able to increase our spends on advertising as well as the wage and number of hours we pay people.  We will be employing people who participate in the industry either as filmmakers or other content creators.

Thank you ever so much for your attention to this! Cinema Canadiana is an unfunded passion project, a true grassroots initiative, and your help will go a long way towards its success, and also to keep the database free and accessible, which is ultra important in an industry with limited marketing dollars.

As always,  your questions and input are most welcome because it is what will help make the site the best it can be! Please visit www.cinemacanadiana.ca to see what's what, to check out the database and to discover the movie of the month.

Together we can make this great!

ps.  So sorry!  We acknowledge the shortcoming of the site and database being only in English. With time and extra resources we are committed to rectifying this. Shout out to all the amazing French language projects made across the country, to those done in the Indigenous languages of these lands and to those in the native languages of the people who immigrate here.

MILESTONES

Here are the goals we are going to accomplish with your support:

$500 - Getting on Track

Help us cover our operating expenses! Since the current beta version of the database was developed without any funding at all, we will begin to pay people with money instead of gratitude for the work that they are doing. We'll also be able to put some money into promotion, which means we'll be able to better promote all the projects in the database! As we reach future milestones, we will be able to increase our spends on advertising as well as the wage and number of hours we pay people.

$1,000 - Movie of the Month Powerup

Finally we’ll be able to pay someone to do this. That means we’ll stand a better job of coordinating with people who worked on the project so that we can make the movie or the month more engaging and more of an event. This will also mean that we will pay screening fees for the selected movies.

$2,000 - New Perks

That’s right, let’s sweeten the deal for all you fine supports! We will send you a small package of Cinema Canadiana merch so that you can help get/keep the Canadian Motion Picture Database top of mind.

$3,000 - Social Media Coordinator

Imagine what we could do if we could pay someone for a few hours a week of social media content. Let’s drum up some more attention for the industry folks!

$5,000 - Adding People Fields

It is embarrassing that we do not have much about the people who work on the projects featured in the database, but you can only go so far with no funding. So help us celebrate all the amazing Canadians working on projects made in Canada and/or by Canadians. We will begin with writers and directors, then adding actors and key crew positions. Over time, we will make it so that any role can be added.

$6,000 - Podcast

Let’s do a podcast about the industry that you want to listen to! The podcast will have a strong focus on the Movie of the Month.

$8,000 - Calendar

Not all projects are only available on the Internet, sometimes they screen in real life. But how can you go if you do not know about them? That’s where the Calendar comes in! It will be able to be filtered by geographical location, format and medium. Once this feature is built, we will be able to pay someone to spend the time tracking down the information and keeping the content up to date.

$10,000 - Videos!

Let’s make some videos! This very well might end of being a new mini trailer for the Movies of the Month. Or just some fun content to promote the industry in general.

$15,000 - Movies on the Map

Ever watch a movie and think that you recognize something in the background? We want to help you figure out where that is! The map will indicate both where a movie is set and where a movie is actually filmed.

$20,000 - Multi Language Site

There are a multitude of languages that are spoken with the borders of Canada. As such, we are embarrassed that the site and database are only in English. So let's be sure to work on that, but it's a big job so we cannot go it alone.

$25,000 - Providing Funding

This is a ways in the future, but the point is that we want to help fund Canadian made film, television and digital projects of any length, animation or live action in one way or another. Exact details to be determine, but we expect to provide marketing support since we are all about raising awareness and connecting with audiences.

CHOOSE THE MOVIE OF THE MONTH

The purpose of the Movies of the Month is to draw attention to a film that has already gone through its theatrical release and now is accessible via other channels. At present we have two movies of the month:

Beaver Tales – a fictional feature film
True North Doc – a feature length documentary
Patreon contributors can nominate a movie and members of the core Cinema Canadiana team (Board of Directors, volunteers and staff) will narrow it down to 3-5 selections based on:

Accessibility – how easily viewers can actually access the film to watch it
Relevance – does the movie have a connection to a film going through, or about to go through, its theatrical release or the festival circuit.
Canadiana – our definition as to what can be included in the database is rather broad but for the Movies of the Month, films with strong Canadian connections and content will be favoured.

From there, all Patreons will be able to vote for the final selection.

Selected movies will be highlighted on the Cinema Canadian website and on social media. As our capacity increases, so will the amount of promotion for each of the Movies of the Month.

In line with our goal to provide a level playing field so that all projects, whether big budgeted or not, have the same promotional opportunities, we have the same perk for everyone. PLEASE feel free to donate more than $1.

Nominations are open until the 15th, then let the voting begin!

GOODIE BAG

No lies, this reward will not be available just yet.

BUT when it is it will be great!  We will mail you a small package of fun stuff to help promote the database.  We're talking about matchboxes, stickers and postcards.  These will help raise awareness for the database and all the projects profiled.
