What is your dream you want to follow?

This is our dream: We want to protect and restore as many reefs as possible. Why? Because coral reefs are essential to all life on earth, but they are threatened with extinction. Do you want your children and grandchildren to experience that same beauty of coral reefs as you can see? Do you want healthy oceans? Then join us creating and maintain reefs, spread awareness and make the changes for a healthy ocean. Your contribution is essential for protecting and restoring coral reefs!

Who are we?
We are Frank and Vera, and we love coral reefs so much that we dedicate our lives to protect and restore them. Coral only grows in tropical areas, so we gave up our life back home in The Netherlands and moved to a tropical island. This is our story of following our dream. Let us take you on a journey...

Frank and Vera

What are coral reefs?
Coral reefs are some of the most beautiful natural areas! They are spectacular to see, as if you are entering a different world. You can encounter hundreds of species of fish and mammals. From the famous clownfish, turtles, rays, seahorses, nudibranchs to sharks. In addition, you can also see dozens of different species of coral in all shapes and colours. Corals are not only beautiful, but are also essential for the well-being of humanity and nature. Corals are colonies of animals working together with an algae inside their tissue creating strong structures we know as the stone-like reefs. The reefs serve as a form of coastal protection, provide shelter and are nurseries for many marine species. They serve as the main source of food and income for 1 in every 8 person on our planet. But despite their importance, coral reefs are threatened with extinction worldwide. If you want to know more about coral reefs, watch the film Chasing Coral. It is a great movie! Or visit our website www.coralgardening.org.

What do we do?
We restore coral reefs by creating artificial reefs. To create a new reef, you need to make a hard substrate where corals can grow on. We build artistic statues in all different shapes and sizes. Basically we build art underwater. Art that is attractive for divers, snorkellers, fish and corals. Our CoralGardens are designed in such a way that they immediately provide an attractive refuge for fish and other critters, which are vital for the development of a healthy and divers reef. Not only does a CoralGarden give a boost to nature, also divers and snorkellers enjoy a new and unique underwater experience. Some of our statues are designed specifically with diver interaction in mind.

At the moment we are creating our first CoralGarden at Koh Tao in Thailand, here is an artist’s impression of how it will look. Our statues are made on land in cooperation with local community, dive schools, tourists and essentially everyone who wants to learn more about coral reefs and wants to be involved in making a positive impact on our ocean. We also give lectures and workshops about the importance of coral reefs and what you can do to protect them. The more people know how essential coral reefs are, why they need protection and how you can do that, the better. By working local we stimulate local economy while bringing the importance of coral reefs to the attention of everyone who relies on a healthy reef in one way or another.

When a statue is finished, we place it under water and grow coral on it. When this CoralGarden on Koh Tao is finished we will go to another location where coral reefs are destroyed and need to be restored. But we can't do this alone!

What can you do?
Restoring coral reefs is our passion and has become a serious full time unpaid volunteer job, at this point we both work 80 to 90 hours a week. We spend our time building the artificial reef, improving our techniques, but also writing to our donators and followers, making videos about what and how we do it, create an open source handbook for people who also want to restore coral reefs etcetera. To pay for new artificial reefs we set up a Dutch foundation, called CoralGardening. This foundation pays for the materials and tools. Think about metal, ropes, welding machine but also our website etc. According to Dutch laws, as founders/chairman, we can't get a salary from this non-profit foundation. Until now we have paid our living expenses from our savings, and that can't be continued for ever. So that's where you can give us a helping hand.

We are in need of support to cover our expenses, so we can focus on building artificial reefs and protecting existing reefs. Our own needs are minimal, but we need to keep the wheels turning, to continuing protecting and restoring reefs. But our dreams are big: we like to inspire as many people as possible, to take small or big steps to make a positive impact for our planet. The more we can focus on this, the bigger the impact we can make.

If you find that nature and healthy oceans are important, support us! If you want to give a one-time donation for materials, you can do that through the Donate page of www.coralgardening.org.

If you think it is important what we do and you want to contribute to thriving coral reefs and a healthy ocean, become one of our Patrons. It is our dream that we create a healthy ocean together and all coral reefs are protected and thriving with life so restoration is not needed anymore. We want your children and grandchildren to enjoy the reefs and what it provides us all as well.

Again thank you so much for even considering supporting us.

Goals
0% complete
Our first goal is to get enough Patrons to cover our daily expenses. We do everything we can to keep our costs low, but of course we need to have a roof over our head and food in our stomachs to be able to do our work. Next to that we also have costs for insurances, visa, work permits and transportation. If we reach this amount we can focus entirely on creating the CoralGarden, getting other people involved and raising awareness.

CoralGardening is a Dutch non-profit foundation with tax-rules that don’t allow any salary paid to people doing the work. So far we have invested decades of savings in our lively hood. We can now show you our vision and the work we are doing. If you like what we have been doing so far and you want to help us grow and improve, becoming a Patron is the way to support us directly.
