About

Country Queers is an ongoing multimedia oral history project documenting the diverse experiences of rural, small town, and country LGBTQIA+ folks in the U.S.A. – across intersecting layers of identity such as race, class, age, ability, gender identity, and religion.

R.Garringer founded this project in 2013 out of an intense frustration with the lack of rural queer visibility both within rural communities and in national queer conversations and media. They had no audio or oral history training at the time, but an intense personal need to find and connect with other rural and small-town LGBTQIA+ folks – to learn from them, to listen, to dig up our histories that have been largely silenced.

Since then, the project has grown to include a collection of 65 oral history interviews with country queers in 15 states, a traveling gallery exhibit featuring images and oral histories gathered through the project, and a podcast. The project also features instagram takeovers where rural and small-town LGBTQIA+ folks are able to share some of their rural queer life with a broader audience.

This project was born at a time when rural queer stories were few and far between in mainstream and social media, and at a time when finding one another as rural queer people often felt nearly impossible.  There is so much more rural queer media in the world today than when this project started in 2013, and that's a beautiful and joyous thing! But we're still laking first person narratives of rural queer life - of, by, and for rural and small town queer and trans folks, which is where this project com

In these interviews, Country Queers tell - in their own words - the complicated & contradictory, the beautiful & painful, the glorious & boring details of their rural queer lives. And, they talk about how other layers of their identities, such a race and class and religion and gender identity, affect their experiences in rural and queer spaces. These stories don't simplify rural spaces or queer spaces. They don't overly romanticize or overly demonize rural places. These stories paint a portrait of rural spaces and queer spaces outside of major cities as complex and nuanced.

Country Queers has always been a part-time, volunteer-run, and crowdfunded labor of love. It wouldn't exist without the generous financial support of so many, the amazing volunteer transcriptionists from New Orleans to Vancouver, and the advice & input of trusted friends and mentors.

Season One of the Country Queers Podcast launches June 30, 2020.  Your support will enable us to continue gathering interviews, supporting community connections among rural and smalltown LGBTQIA+ folks, bringing the gallery exhibit to more small towns, and producing future seasons of this podcast.

Please support this project as it grows!
