“Artists to my mind are the real architects of change, and not the political legislators who implement change after the fact. ” -- William S. Burroughs
Originally created as an indie publishing company out of Portland, Oregon, Curious Apes has now become a robust website and event host dedicated to art, articles, poems, prose, and podcasts—all with one main focus in mind:
That's right—all the jokes, all the rants, all the poetic word-smithing—it's all an attempt to add momentum toward a world that's better for all us.
Why? Well... you travel to enough foreign places, read enough books, do enough mushrooms and experience enough vulnerable situations, and eventually you start to realize that we're all in this together, none of us less deserving than any other when it comes to the opportunity to be happy and fulfilled.
That means putting an end to racism, sexism, homophobia, greed, and any other form of indoctrinated thought that stupefies and suppresses freethinking and the sovereign-rights an individual holds over their mind, body, and life.
Our goals are simple:
- Create content that inspires, humors, challenges, and promotes humanism and social equality for all.
- Build relationships with people who appreciate such content and/or want to create the same.
We'll do this by examining as deeply and as critically as possible the spectrum from ancient thinkers to future technologies, simultaneously exploring how world events, politics, and current trends are altering the human condition.
While this will often come in the form of a poem, an article, a short story or novel, most frequently we will be delivering such content to you in the form of a weekly podcast—either as interviews, performances, or discussions. There will also be additional private podcasts depending on the reward level you choose, and potentially several additional bonus member podcasts (featuring you) that we'll share with the world at large.
What's in it for you?
Look: We don't want to rip you off. So we've done everything in our power to make sure that your support of our passion and humanism is deeply rewarded and utilized as best as possible. We want to ensure that you're getting every bang for your buck.
And so, at every single reward level, we've overflowed our gift baskets to you with as much thankful goodness as we could reasonably manage—there's no cheap filler here.
And again, because this is first and foremost about community, we've tried to make our rewards actually INVOLVE you, allowing your work and your thoughts to be as integrated as much as possible. This could be anything from you submitting suggestions for our content, providing questions we'll answer in a private podcast, directly adding content to the website, and even appearing on the podcast itself.
Who is Curious Apes?!
My name is Steven E. Parton . In addition to establishing Curious Apes, I'm a writer, podcaster, philosopher, and a futurist/transhumanist—with an emphasis on humanist.
I have dedicated the past 8 years of life towards studying the human condition and learning how to better it—for both myself and the world at large. During that time, I've studied several branches of psychology(especially Jungian), Alchemy, Hermeticism, Taoism, Buddhism, Chaos Magick, Thelema Magick, Wiccan, parapsychology, and plethora of other fields relating to mysticism and the study of the soul .
I also received a degree in business and computer science with a minor in mathematics (and nearly completed a psychology degree as well), and have taught artificial intelligence, spent years wrangling with practical applications of neuroscience and quantum physics , and have consistently kept myself as up-to-date as possible on the current trends in technology and the zeitgeist of our times.
Though this is where my passion undoubtedly lies, I'm still forced to partake in the capricious, stressful, and long hours of freelance web-development. Any bit of help you provide gives me the ability to spend less hours grinding away at meaningless work so that I can instead focus more bringing more interesting people and meaningful content to you, our wonderful supporters, at a higher frequency and with higher production value.
But worry not: even if you can't spare some aid, Curious Apes will always be free.
