WHO AM I?

My name is Samuel Roe, and I’ve been writing LGBT-themed fiction for the past five years under the name “Cynus”. I am roughly thirty years of age, I have an extensive background in religion and food service, and I know what it’s like to grow up gay in a community which doesn’t understand what that means. I am human, I am passionate, and I am driven.

WHY AM I DOING THIS?

I want to help create a world which celebrates diversity instead of stifling it. I’ve always believed in the philosophy of ‘becoming the change you wish to see in the world’, and I live my life in accordance with my belief that a diverse world is a better world.
When I was young, I rarely found protagonists in stories whom I could relate to. It wasn’t the authors’ fault by any means—I’m a unique person, relating to people isn’t always my strong suit—but I always felt somewhat left out when I read fiction. Don’t get me wrong, there were some wonderful stories which really connected with me. Some notable characters I connected with are Andrew “Ender” Wiggin from "Ender’s Game", Jarlaxle Baenre from R.A. Salvatore’s "Drizzt Do’Urden" series, and Simon from "Lord of the Flies". Despite such beloved characters, I found them few and far between. With the notable exception of Ender, they rarely featured front and center in the stories they existed in.
Because I’ve always felt like an outsider—and I connect with outsiders—I write to create protagonists for people like me: those who live outside the mainstream. I want to tell neglected stories, that were pushed aside in the name of either principle or profit. The goal is to make good art.
But I do want to dedicate my life to it, and for that there are costs. I want to be making art all the time, and I believe my message is important enough to give my constant devotion to it. The reason this Patreon exists is to accomplish that goal.

SO WHAT'S PATREON?

Patreon provides a platform for me to make a living while spreading my message. If you’re not familiar with the service, this is how it works:
  • Patreon is a crowdfunding service. It allows a creator to be funded by a large number of people rather than relying solely on the generosity of a single benefactor (as opposed to say, traditional publishing or a record deal)
  • Patrons pledge a small amount of money either per creation or per month (I run mine through the ‘per creation’ model). This can be as little as $1, and as much as the patron would like to donate.
  • You can select a monthly maximum so that you won’t be charged more than a certain amount. Say you pledged $10 per creation, but you set your monthly maximum at $20. That means even if I create three or more items in a month, you’ll never be charged more than $20 in a month.
  • Patreon charges a small fee which is withdrawn from your pledge. This is a much smaller fee than other crowdfunding sites, and is used to keep Patreon up and running.
I’ve enjoyed Patreon so far, and I think it’s one of the best services out there to help artists break into the market. It’s even given me the courage to break away from my 9-5 and write full-time, even though I’m not quite able to subsist on Patreon alone as of yet. To give you an idea of how Patreon can help me do that, here’s a few examples of what your pledge will do for me:
  • Your support helps me eat. I'm cooking a lot more often now to keep costs down, and every little bit helps with groceries.
  • Your support helps me pay for gas. I'm the principal transport for three people, and sometimes car upkeep costs can add up.
  • Your support helps me pay rent. Right now things are tight, but I'm managing. Rent adds a lot of stress to my life right now, however, and the less stressed I am by that, the more attention I can give to my writing.
  • Your support helps me create art. It's inspiring to see how many people are willing to support me, and who want me to keep producing my stories. It's pure motivation.
  • Your support helps me keep content free. I want everyone to have access to the writing, which is why I do it for free, save for the generosity you wonderful people bestow on me. Without Patreon, I'd have to pursue traditional publishing. Thank you for making it so I don't have to do that.
All of these pledges add up. First it’s just a few little things, but eventually I can pay the internet bill, then I can pay for food, then I can actually make my rent payment! Your support is life-changing, and allows me pure freedom to create.

Thank you so much!

IN CONCLUSION

I hope you’ll consider supporting me and my art. And even if you don’t, please at least take the time to experience my art and feel something. Vulnerability is power, and the more you open yourself up to art, the more vulnerable you'll be. We can all change the world if we all can change ourselves.

Embrace Vice and Vision, in all your decisions.
