About DOTS RPG Project

Greetings Traveler! The DOTS Guild welcomes you with open arms. I am known as the Traveling Bard, but my home is here at the Guild while in town. Come have some mead, relax by the fire and let me tell you of how we came to be, and how you can help us grow.

The DOTS RPG Project was born in 2017 when Jack Berberette wanted to find a way to make tabletop role playing games (TTRPG) easier for his friend D. As a blind gamer D faced many obstacles while running games and playing with friends, but he overcame them with ease. Still, Jack wanted to do what he could because even the smallest things can make a difference in someone's life. He set out on a course to not only design new products but learn braille himself, ensuring things would work and make sense to a blind user. The seed was planted and the DOTS RPG Project began! Jack saw the need for more accessible items immediately; rulebooks, various gaming aids like hit/health point (HP) trackers, spell slot trackers, and of course dice could be produced with braille or other tactile symbols. Things started off small with sample dice and numbered counters, plus some braille embossed books that their local community joined together to help fund. Jack and D worked closely for many months on different gaming aids and multiple designs for braille dice, breaking traditional braille numbering rules to create the version of the dice we use today. Unfortunately D passed away in January 2018, just before DOTS made it out to the public in March 2018. He is no longer here to share in our excitement as we get in touch with game companies, developers, and celebrities that love our project, but we know that his light and love is shining down upon us with every step! The DOTS RPG Project continues on in his memory, working towards improving accessibility in the world of TTRPG. This would not have been possible if not for him, his enthusiasm, and his suggestions. DOTS is his legacy, and we will carry that on for many years to come.

While DOTS started with a focus on accessibility for those who are fully blind, we have since branched out to start addressing many different topics. Once we became known for the work we were doing for the visually impaired, people with other disabilities started to reach out and ask for help. Now, we're working on educating ourselves so we can better cater to those who have problems with low vision, color blindness, limited hearing, limited mobility, reading comprehension, mental illness, and whatever other things people may need. We are happy to take the time to learn whatever we can so we can work towards improving accessibility in gaming for all individuals.

It's an amazing tale so far, isn't it? Just wait...the DOTS Guild is only getting started!

As the DOTS RPG Project grows, there are many things we will be able to offer. First and foremost, we're always happy to be the point of contact for people looking for accessibility information. Whether we have the answers ourselves or need to point them to someone more knowledgeable, spreading the right information is incredibly important. We are constantly working on new designs for accessible gaming aids that can be 3D printed, as well as transcribing the various works we've gotten from publishers to create braille books. We will be expanding our DOTS Family and working even closer with them to develop our network of locations that have accessible gaming aids to offer. At these friendly local game stores (FLGS), schools, libraries and community centers, we're setting up lending libraries with not only our braille dice and various gaming aids, but also braille books! We provide the 3D printed aids and braille books free of charge for places to lend out during games as needed. We'll also set up events much like Tabletop Day in April, inviting disabled gamers to our DOTS Family locations to participate in events and gaming sessions where special attention is paid to making everything accessible and inclusive. Our hope is to have countless stores worldwide work with us in bringing inclusivity to the table, opening up their doors to people that may have never set foot in a FLGS before since nothing catered to their needs. Not only does it have the potential to welcome new people to the gaming community, but it will also hopefully show various creators and publishers the value of accessibility friendly items when they see some “real world” applications of braille books and accessible gaming aids.

With goals like this, it may seem like the DOTS Guild is strong enough to stand on its own. You must remember; a Guild is nothing without the support of its members.

At times, there are more goals and possibilities happening than we can wrap our heads around! Developing a charity that is focused on such a small market has been challenging but not without it's rewards. The gaming community has come out in waves and waves of support and love, showing how important and needed our project and ideas are. With everything we have accomplished to date, none of it would have been possible if it was not wanted. We are incredibly thankful for everyone who has shown their support so far! We often get asked when we are going to run a Kickstarter campaign for our braille books, braille dice or other gaming aids, and we've wholeheartedly decided not to. Our products were never intended to be something used to make profit, and we want to keep it that way. The books must always be distributed to organizations within the DOTS Family lending library, following our "no profit" agreement with the publishers, but there are many individuals looking to purchase our 3D printed items. Our dice are always available on our Shapeways page for only the cost of printing, we make no profit on any of those sales. Since Shapeways uses professional high quality machines, this brings the cost per 7 set of rpg dice to about $80, something unattainable for most disabled individuals. We see you, we hear you, and have a plan to fix this - after we get our promised sets out to the DOTS Family members, we will be selling them ourselves for half the price of Shapeways! Printed at home on the Anycubic Photon resin printer and finished by hand, they are some of the best non professional quality prints you can get!

The DOTS Guild is certainly on a path to greatness, but it will thrive with the assistance of individuals pure of heart. Is that you?

Heroes are always wanted, and volunteers come in many different forms. Some have taken up roles as DOTS Scribes, helping us grow the DOTS Family. Others have taken on the role of DOTS Sage, working on transcribing the various titles from publishers into braille. We come to Patreon offering a new way for people to support us if they can't help with specific tasks, but wish to donate and may only be able to spare a few dollars a month. Every little bit helps us cover the cost everything DOTS: 3D printing dice and other items, braille book embossing, shipping donated items to DOTS Family members, DOTS Gear merch creation, convention appearances, website hosting, and all the other fun stuff that goes along with running a charity. Our tiers are mostly digital based rewards, but we've partnered with Die Hard Dice to be able to offer some super cool mystery dice rewards as well!

Will you join the DOTS Guild?
