Well, you've made it here. That means either the link caught your eye or else you are already at least somewhat aware of what I do. I am going to work on the assumption that you are one of those curious folks who happened to click an icon. That being the case, welcome to my Patreon! Feel free to check out my website and blog if you want to find a little more about what I do. Once you've taken a look, head back here. Then onward to how I came to be on Patreon.

Welcome back (assuming you left). Now that I'm sure you have an idea about my writing, let me tell you a bit about how I came to join Patreon. Most of what I write outside of my blog is fiction. I've written several RPGs, numerous stories, as well as working on a novel. There's also Nighteyes, the first series of stories I ever published for-profit. I also finished a non-fiction book about the Appalachian Trail. On the blog, I write a blend of non-fiction articles and some fiction. At one time, I had quite a few articles for other sites. Unfortunately, most of those sites no longer exist.

How I got started
My first genuine publishing was a blend of ghost-writing and online content creation. I grew frustrated with the situation, however. Content writing paid so very little and drove traffic to someone else. Ghostwriting paid fair, but just once. It was especially frustrating that all rights to the work belonged to someone else. I decided to stop publishing on other sites, even though it meant I lost the immediate pay from them. I instead shifted my focus to working for myself and building up my own traffic. The sudden drop in funds felt about as fun as a kick in the gut. Still, it was liberating work on what I was passionate about instead of other people's projects.

This shift has led to the regular publication of free articles and stories through my sites. I love being able to put free content out, but it does eat time that would go paying work. I don't mind, of course, but it sometimes feels like a thankless task. Banner ads brought in money, but annoy me. Because of this, I decided I wanted to offer readers a chance to donate instead. To this end, I added a donation tab to my site. Donations allow me to work fewer hours at my day job, so more time's spent on my writing.

The move to Patreon
So now we find ourselves in the present. I've crafted a Patreon page to replace the impersonal donation link. I will still be doing my blog posts and am not looking for funding relating to specific creative works. This is funding that will open up the possibility of creating more works in general. Some will be commercial ventures like my novels. Others will are free to the public or to the patron library. There are a few donation levels that will go straight into funding patron-only works. This way those of you who donate get to enjoy exclusively.

There is a great value of this I believe. I hope that you will help me offer entertaining new works of fiction and informative works of non-fiction. New games, new stories, new articles and perhaps even a touch of machinima and art. Who knows, there might even be something like a graphic novel. Keep up with what's going on at my blog, by joining my newsletter. Find free works in the gratis section of my website. Patrons, of course, also have free access to the patron library as it grows.

Still curious how it works?

At this level, you are welcome to participate in my early reader program. This gives you early access to the books that I intend to publish, as a Beta reader. It lets you have a hand in helping to refine them into a better work. If you do choose to be involved, please be aware that the early reading program is different from reading for pleasure. It is about finding errors or weaknesses in the writing and helping me stamp them out. Early readers help to make the best possible finished work. You also gain the benefit of the previous reward levels.

I offer to you a signed book of your choice from my published works. Not just a signature. I will include a personal note so that it is something a bit more than you would find at the average book signing. The book must be a book available in print.

You do not have to pick right away. If you would prefer to wait until I have released another book, that is perfectly acceptable. You also gain the benefit of the previous reward levels except for the thank you card, since that note will be instead added to the signing.

When you offer support at this level, I will work on creating a custom module for one of my published RPGs. Choose the game you like and let me know.

I will correspond with you via email to work out some details and then set about creating a unique scenario. This includes all of the related statistics that will go with it. A copy of this will be sent to you directly.

It will be made available in the patron library also, along with a notation that you are the supporter to help see that it was written. You also gain the benefit of the previous reward levels up to $25.

At this level, I am going to produce a single audio chapter of a book (or in the case of something very small, the entire book) for each person who has pledged at this level. I will post each of these audio chapters in the patron library along with a notation of whose donations have ensured each was possible.

Right now, there are 20 of this level, accounting for the total number of published works that can be turned into an audiobook. You also gain the benefit of the previous reward levels up to $25.

I would love to have soundtracks crafted for some of my works. When you support at this level, I will work on securing an artist to create one song from that eventual soundtrack.

Right now I am offering 10 of these for the work in progress of under the working title of Ill'ln. The finished work will be available through the patron library along with notation of who helped make it possible. You also gain the benefit of the previous reward levels up to $25.
Goals
$0 of $1 per month
For a mere dollar per month pledged, I am able to continue bringing regular content to my blog and website. One dollar per month renews the domain name at the end of each year.
