About

"At the back of my husband’s head, hidden from view behind thick rings of slow-growing pines, there is an ancient citadel, Ronald Reagan. Although the growth is not a malign one, the great age of these carefully interlocking structures - the timber beams, balconies, tin rooftops, tiny alleys, the crumbling gothic piazza, and of course the cathedral itself, with its mysterious buttresses that seem more to push the cathedral away than bear it up - attract a great proclivity to problems with damp, woodworm, subsidence - and therefore - to collapse. You must know how it feels to totally collapse?"

Excerpt from Island #18: After the Rains, or Self-portrait as an Agricultural Worker

Hi, I'm Daniel O'Reilly - independent author, philosopher, publisher and media artist living and writing in a remote, mountainous retreat in northern Spain with my wife, daughter and sausage dog Dexter. Welcome to my new surreal literary project [archipelago] - a short story mill and small press producing avant-garde fiction exclusively for my Patrons here on Patreon.

Patreon is where fans, friends and readers of all kinds get exclusive access to [archipelago], and to the factory floor where this original short fiction is researched, manufactured and distributed. I'd like to take this opportunity to say thanks to my superb and loyal Patrons for enabling this huge endeavour and encouraging the story to continue to this advanced stage where the potential for future development feels tantalising and avenues are beginning to open in surprising places. The [archipelago] project is a factory, a production-line for the manufacture of short stories - sur-realities - like landscapes trapped in glass paperweights, tiny islands to escape into brief recreation. Stories from the long grass. Stories from under a rock. Stories lying drunk in the street. Stories from the far mountain pass. They are bottled dreams manufactured in a factory of surplus desire, a factory for the production of escape-hatches, back-doors and other ways out. [archipelago] is a labyrinth of ways to escape...

Alleyway in Gothic Tortosa

I’ve been writing the stories that make up [archipelago] since 2018, though I’ve been researching and designing the concept for considerably longer. In making the process publicly visible via both social media and literary situations in real life, and by encouraging dialogue to stimulate critical decision making on every aspect of the project - from the initial sketch of an idea to a physical, handmade book - I attempt to incorporate the hybrid social experience of contemporary life into the fabric of the project, right down to the way it is read. Patreon helps me get new fiction directly to my fans each and every fortnight, like a sandbox for surrealism where I can test out ideas, techniques and strategies with my patrons, and listen to their feedback. This material is later compiled, edited, printed, (even translated, when I’m feeling brave,) and finally stitched into handmade chapbooks and other literary ephemera currently being hawked directly to the public from my market stall, to be found in the various fairs I attend around northern Spain where I live and work. I've recently published short fiction in the Bengaluru Review, original poetry and essays in the Cutbank Literary Magazine, Roots-Routes Magazine and The Dawntreader Literary Journal, and I'm currently exploring other subversive forms of writing, including in performance and public exhibition.

Bookbinding in process

My previous significant works include the labyrinthine website The Unstitute online art lab and artists’ co-operative space founded with my wife and longtime collaborator Marianna in 2011; conceived as a unique architecture to explore or a maze to get lost in, (it does actually contain several mazes,) this project displays literary methods and conceptual themes now reflected in and developed more intensely for [archipelago]. At this time I produced and screened original video art in competitions and exhibitions in over 22 countries worldwide. On previous world travels, I worked for the radio station at the Auroville international township in Tamil Nadu, India, recording international musicians and airing original sound compositions. I received my Master’s degree in fine art from Chelsea College of Art and Design, and my first-class Honours degree from Winchester School of Art.

And the future? As the project evolves these stories take on an array of physical as well as paperless forms; I'm developing  augmented reality stories accessible through your phone via QR codes to be discovered through an ever-expanding network of geocaches hidden in the urban and rural environment, as well as planning a line of limited edition streetware which turns people into physical URLs - caches containing stories to be discovered and exchanged with others: your patronage allows this story to evolve in extraordinary ways, plus ensures you are always first to find out what’s new.

Els Ports Natural Parc, Catalonia

$1 patronage per story gets you a ticket to the whole [archipelago] discovered so far which already includes more than 50 original short stories, plus you get an original, high-quality short story published exclusively for my patrons every fortnight on Saturday morning. You even get your name credited in the final manuscript to display your patronage of the project for posterity! For higher-tier patrons I have developed a range of cool and unusual rewards, including previously published art books and handmade chapbooks.

Curious? Read selected stories for free, plus find short essays, collected photographic research of stunning rural Catalonia all assembled under the convenient featured tags on my page. Dive in and discover for yourself the hothouse conditions for strange beauty presented by [archipelago] ...

Goals
$5 of $10 per story
When I reach $10 per short story, I'll have hit my first major milestone on the path to a sustainable career writing avant-garde short fiction! Thank you so much for helping me reach this milestone in my career.

When I reach this goal, I'll be creating longer, more detailed fictions. I'm currently creating stories of 500-1000+ words which is greatly condensed, but when I reach this milestone I'll be writing around 2000 words per story.
