Thanks for visiting my page!  I am the primary content creator for the DravenDarken channel on YouTube.

Today's open world video games are achieving a level of visual quality that not long ago was undreamed of.  The combination of beautiful and expansive open worlds, and the freedom of characters to traverse those landscape (or starscapes) and engage in whatever activities the player wishes, invites the creation of storytelling via video capture from such games.  But to make the jump from a game world to a story told in video also requires an original plot that can be fitted into the confines of the game, voice actors to play roles that aren't reflected in the game, occasional visual effects to augment elements of the game where they are needed to facilitate an original story, and finally, an original musical soundtrack that ebbs and flows with the storyline to support plot development (whereas in-game music, while often very good indeed, must by definition also be generic enough to apply to whatever activities a player might be engaging in).  Add these elements to the mix, and the result is machinima, which can be in most respects as much of a creative medium as is any other type of film or video, with the sole exception of leveraging visuals from a game.

The DravenDarken channel is dedicated to creating high-quality, dramatic machinima videos and series that, in all aspects other than the game content that is featured, endeavor to approach the production values of commercial films and television series.  This includes painstakingly scripted stories, special effects to enhance the visuals where necessary, 100% original cinematic soundtracks recorded in my own studio, and (in most cases) professional actors playing the voice roles.

The first published series, entitled DarkenSpace, is a dramatic series of machinima videos set in the galaxy of the game Elite: Dangerous and posted to YouTube.  They tell the ongoing story of shuttle pilot Draven Darken as circumstances beyond his control turn his life upside down.  The series features professional actor Charles Hubbell voicing the lead role as well as a number of other professional actors in supporting roles.  Several hundred hours of time have gone into the creation of each individual episode, for video capture, editing, screenplay writing and soundtrack composition and recording.

Although the initial arc of DarkenSpace has been concluded, additional series are in the planning stages right now, and will not be limited to Elite: Dangerous content.  There are several other games which I already plan to feature in future series.  I also plan to return to Elite: Dangerous for a new season of DarkenSpace as soon as the situation allows for it (see the goal on this page for details on that).

The machinima episodes on the DravenDarken YouTube channel will always remain free to all viewers.  But patrons can and will play a pivotal role in propelling the channel forward with higher quality content and at a faster pace.  Right now my only option is to work full-time in another field and then apply what should have been my rest and recovery time to content creation, which both limits my output and taxes my health.  With patron support, that could change dramatically, and creating this type of content could become the main thrust of my time, leading to greater output as well as benefits to quality (there's something to be said for not being exhausted all of the time!). Also, with sufficient patron support, additional patron-only content could also become possible, such as episodes with commentary, behind the scenes videos from the content creation process, and even blooper videos.

While I have great pride in the first season of DarkenSpace, I have even bigger plans and hopes for the DravenDarken channel going forward.  I hope you will consider becoming a patron, and thereby being an integral part of it.
