Deep Baltic is a website dedicated to providing high-quality, original and long-form content about Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in English.

As you’ll know if you follow the region closely, more often than not mainstream media coverage in English is shallow, poorly informed and repetitive – focusing on the same stories over and over again. What the Baltic states and people interested in them need is nuance, passion and, as often as possible, an inside view, from locals and from experts. And that’s what we’ve tried to provide at Deep Baltic – featuring pieces on Baltic culture, life and history from contributors who really know and care about this part of the world, showcasing fascinating places to visit and compelling photography, and interviewing those with interesting perspectives on the region.

If you want an idea of what Deep Baltic does, just have a browse through the 180 pieces we’ve published over the last three years. We think it’s fair to say that this is the only site where you’re likely to find all in one place a detailed analysis of the Latvian National Communists of the 1950s, an appreciation of the wonders of Lithuanian birch juice and a lovingly curated playlist of music from the best contemporary and classic Estonian films. That’s here, here and here, by the way – and those are just three examples.

We want to keep the site free to access, as a resource for all those interested in the region. However, it’s not free to run it, and maintaining the site requires large amounts of time both from myself and from those who contribute their articles and time. Making a monthly commitment will help us to ensure that we can keep doing what we’re doing, as well as pay our contributors for their hard work and do other cool things like arranging translations of interesting stories from the local languages and setting up a regular podcast.

It will soon also be possible to donate directly using PayPal, but this is our preferred method because it is a recurring payment and that makes planning a bit easier for us. So if you value Deep Baltic and what we do, please consider helping us out.
