About

WELCOME

We are Document Scotland - Sophie GerrardJeremy Sutton-Hibbert and Colin McPherson, three Scottish documentary photographers who came together in 2012 to photograph and share stories about our nation at a pivotal moment in its history.

This is our Patreon page. Here you can learn about our current work, our ideas and plans, and where you can help us realise our vision by becoming one of our supporting Patrons.

Document Scotland are (l-r) Colin McPherson, Sophie Gerrard, and Jeremy Sutton-Hibbert.

WHAT WE DO

Since 2012, our journey has allowed us to make and share work at home and abroad though exhibitions, publications, live events and our Document Scotland website.

We are proud to have collaborated with galleries, organisations and institutions to promote, exhibit and publish photographic stories about Scotland.

"The Document Scotland website is an important resource around the documentary photography genre, in highlighting contemporary work and also setting a context for historical work that is otherwise neglected or now known about widely." - Malcolm Dickson, Director of Street Level Photography, Glasgow.

Our work has been featured and published in many influential publications, we’ve taken part in festivals and workshops and we've held Salon events engaging directly with audiences in towns, cities and communities across the country.

In addition to our own projects, Document Scotland have showcased outstanding photography of and about Scotland by numerous photographers.

Until now, we have relied on grants and awards to fund various successful and critically-acclaimed projects, often self-funding our ideas, committing our time because we believe passionately in the work we make.

We remain dedicated to building on the traditions of documentary photography in this country, a rich history which stretches back centuries.

We can not do this without you. It's been a long and enjoyable journey so far, but to continue this project, with the energy and creativity it deserves, we need your support.

Who are Document Scotland? We are, and so are you.

"At the Martin Parr Foundation, we are collecting and showing work from all over the UK and Ireland. I have been aware of Document Scotland group for many years now and have followed their work and admire their aims and achievements. We are very pleased to have the opportunity to show their new group exhibition A Contested Land for the first time in the UK” - Martin Parr.

WHAT WE OFFER OUR PATRONS

As a supporter your generous patronage will help Document Scotland to continue our work and sustain and expand our creative practise. Through access to exclusive blogs, online galleries, podcasts and live online events we'll introduce new and dynamic contemporary Scottish documentary photography exploring a variety of diverse, distinct and important voices.

You'll have the opportunity to hear from photographers as they create work through essays, interviews and podcasts, and discover archives and historic collections shedding light on our photographic past. We'll take you behind the scenes, in effect coming on location with us, as we report back with images, words and sounds from projects around the country.

We will publish a regular schedule of upcoming events so you can see what your patronage is supporting, and with your generous help Document Scotland will be in a position to remunerate our contributors.

As we grow our list of publications, prints and creative endeavours for sale and download, as a patron and supporter you will be offered these first.

We'll hold monthly online events, to which you'll have exclusive access, where we can chat together, discuss the projects we're making and showcasing, how the work is made, why and for whom.

We appreciate some friends would like to show support via a one-off donation. We greatly value all contributions, and as ever wish to accommodate you in a way which makes you feel comfortable.

As a valued patron you're invited to join in the conversation, to contribute and share your voice, as we make this journey together. The more support we have, the more we can do to add texture to the rich and vibrant photographic story of Scotland.

You don't just support us, you join us.

THANK YOU!

As a patron, your generous and kind support, no matter which tier of patronage you pledge, enables us to fulfil our vision, and we deeply appreciate it.

Scotland has an incredible history in documentary photography, and together with your help we will continue to add to the lineage which stretches from David Octavius Hill and Robert Adamson in the 19th century, through Oscar Marzaroli in the 1970s to the photographers of now and into the future. That means a lot, and we thank you.

Let's discover Scotland, together.

Goals
30% complete
In our initial stages of receiving patronage we commit to paying our featured photographers £25.00 per portfolio/contribution. Until now we couldn't afford that. But having patronage helps not only us, but the wider photographic community.

And as our patronage grows, so we shall pass that on with incremental increased payments to those photographers sharing their valuable work.

We're growing the pie for everyone, not dividing it amongst ourself.

Join us, support us and help contribute to a sustainable photographic industry for creatives in Scotland.
