I'm a freelance science writer, specializing in physics, astronomy, and the culture of science. But nobody smart goes into science writing for the money. We do it because we love our messy, complicated, beautiful universe, and eat ramen. So whether you're a new reader or have been reading my stuff for a while, thank you for joining me, and I hope to keep writing the kinds of quality content you deserve.

Supporting my Patreon means paying for the kinds of essays I literally can't afford to write otherwise: stories about how science works (and often fails to work); personal — even emotional — reflections on science new and old; and the kinds of analyses we used to do when personal blogs were a thing. So thank you again, and I hope you'll continue to support.

You get early copies of all the essays I write. It's that simple!
Neutrino
$3 or more per essay 3 patrons
In addition to the essays, I will send you a monthly personalized postcard or electronic email with an astronomical or physics image on it.
Quark
$5 or more per essay 4 patrons
In addition to the text versions, you get an audio version of the same essays, so you can hear me talking to you in your car. If that's your thing.
Nucleus
$6 or more per essay 0 patrons
This combines the benefits of the "Quark" and "Neutrino" levels: you get both an audio version of each essay and a monthly postcard or email!
Atom
$10 or more per essay 2 patrons
In addition to the text and audio essays, you can pick an essay topic for me to write about! (Though you still have to accept that I'm gonna write it my own way, sorry. $10/month isn't enough for me to say e.g. dark matter isn't real or Einstein was wrong about relativity or whatever.) If there's something cool or interesting or something you simply don't understand and want me to explain it, here's your chance!
Molecule
$12 or more per essay 0 patrons
This combines the Atom and Neutrino levels: you get text, audio, postcard, and the option to select an essay topic.
Black Hole
$100 or more per essay 1 patron
In addition to text, audio, and monthly postcard, I will give you a monthly one-hour personalized video tutorial on a topic of your choice. (Primary limit: it has to be a topic I know something about, so you might want to discuss with me before committing!)
Goals
$159 of $800 per essay
One bonus essay per month, on a topic patrons vote on!
