Ryan Van Schaack Very well done as always, I can't wait for more. However I do have a question. I am one of your $3 dollar tiered backers but i never received an email for the 1 day early access. I'm not mad or anything like that, I'm just wondering what happened?

Extra Credits That's odd. Early access went up September 25 around 2am, if I remember correctly. I would try checking your spam folders for anything sent around that time, to see if perhaps Patreon is getting spam-blocked on your account.

Extra Credits Look up the Battle of Dorylaeum, and you can read about it! There are several sources that talk about it, so the basic facts are fairly well attested - although that being said, I always enjoy a healthy dose of doubt. :) Never get your history from only one source!

De I want to say how much I appreciate the way the art is full of little cues and details to help us all remember who we're talking about and basic facts about them. Those sunglasses on Hughe may be silly but they make you go "Oh yeah, the We're Cool guy who's father fought for Byzantine and who made it to Constantinople without losing too many guys or looting." The same goes for Raymond's eyepatch and Bohemand's mustache, the old guy and the tricky guy. Without these reminders I'd be totally lost.

Rafael Teske Wow, this iteration is being the best for me too. Much funnier and easier to grasp. The costumes, accessories (beards, hats, eye patches), letters on characters chests (more than one sometimes) and the eventual banners with names fixed what was for me the biggest problem with the series: remembering the names of the central characters. Keep the awesome work, I think this iteration will make me increase my patronage ;)

Shaun Spalding Ah that's unfortunate, I'd want to just let you in on the reward as I'm sure your pledge is legitimate but that causes a slippery slope in my mind and it becomes harder to judge other cases like this one by one. So I'm just going to be consistent. Thank you ever so much for your support however.

Stephen Yes... The Children's Crusade was... An even worse disaster. (...Maybe. The historic record is a little muddled on what's fact and what's fiction from that mess, though I think it's clear that it was a complete mess - The gist is that a teenager got vissions of Christ telling him to raise a band of children (or possibly peasants) to go convert Muslims in the holy land to Christianity), many starved to death on the way to the Mediteranian, which they expected to /part for them/, Moses style. Some kindly seamen gave the rest and those who didn't drown on voyage (At least one of the boats sank on the way) were then sold into slavery at the other side of the crossing. At least, as I recall. And, as I said at the start, it's fairly unclear how much of this is actual history, how much is myth, and how much is conflations of different events.

RMS Oceanic 1202. After the partial success of the Third Crusade in the previous decade, Pope Innocent III calls for a new crusade to truly take back Jerusalem. Not as many people sign up for the Fourth Crusade as before, but a respectable army is assembled in Venice. There is a lot of travelling, but with the aid of a faction within it, the Crusaders reach one of the key cities of the area. While waiting on their next move, their internal ally is killed by an enemy. The crusaders have only one choice: To secure the city by sacking. They kill thousands, send many prized artifacts back west, and the capture of the city allows new Christian Kingdoms to arise. After two years of hard campaigning, Constantinople is firmly in Christian hands. Wait, what?

Extra Credits James mentioned in the Q&A that this is the most... "successful" Crusade. I've been watching the episodes with that perspective in mind, because if THIS is the most successful Crusade... well, yeah. Stephen and RMS have sorta covered how much of a disaster the other Crusades were, and believe me, the First Crusade is not exactly a rollicking success in itself.

Stephen Due to the magnitude of the horrors of the Nazi regime it's easy to forget just how many anti-semitic atrocities were committed against the various Jewish populations of Europe prior to the holocaust. For a few examples, look up Blood Libel on wikipedia, since that was the... 'justification'... of a fair few of them.

RMS Oceanic At the coronation of Richard of England (Richard the Lionheart), there was a pogrom against English Jews, which Richard had to intercede in to stop it. Accounts of it in Latin use the word "holocaustum" to describe it. Anti-Semitism has a long history, and no one nation is innocent.

Marco Honrade Sounds good, what years are you guys planning to cover for this series? I can't Imagine fitting the entire history of the Ottoman Empire from the Founding of the House of Osman to Defeat in WW1 in 7 episodes.

RMS Oceanic Speaking from a narrative viewpoint, the logical climax of the story would probably be the fall of Constantinople. They are not yet at their peak, but it firmly establishes them as players on the world stage. A hypothetical Part 2 could probably take you up to Vienna. I'm not sure whether a part 3 should cover the stagnating/decline period - but then I'm not an expert on Ottoman history - or maybe jump into WW1 and the birth of Turkey.
September 26, 2015 22:02:37 · Reply
Christina Maria Jessen Damn, moving up to the birth of Turkey would be a confusing, miserable story for everybody involved. It'd hold a genocide, several ethnic purges committed by multiple parties, lots of British and French imperialism, a world war, a civil war and possibly a number of smaller wars if it goes before WWI and pretty much nobody with any kind of power to root for. It's also pretty hard to turn into a coherent narrative since there isn't much of a central character you can focus it on, nor a single main thrust of events to focus on.

Extra Credits We're not decided yet, but we'll definitely take a snapshot of one era of Ottoman history and do a deep dive on that. In the same way, our World War I series covered just the beginning of WWI, but hopefully gave people enough of a taste that those who wanted to know more decided to go find it. Plus, the snapshot approach means we can always come back and do another series about the same empire in a different era!

Stephen Seems pretty amazing that we've got topics up to the start of 2016 now. And how few topics that is even doing weekly episodes...

Extra Credits I know, right? We originally envisioned each series as four weeks plus Lies, but now that we've gotten deeper into it we find that too often, four weeks would cut the topics too short. We're cutting them pretty short already at six weeks, but still!
