Alan Hazelden is creating free webgames
Who are you?
Hi, I'm Alan Hazelden! I'm 28 and have two brothers and no pets. I'm an above-average juggler, a below-average dancer, and I'm the only person to have ever completed Mega-GIRP.More pertinently, I make videogames such as the PAX10/IndieCade nominated Sokobond, the ridiculous BRICK[bricksmash]SMASH and the adorable A Good Snowman Is Hard To Build.
I love making small weird games like Shit Snake, You're Pulleying My Leg, Mirror Isles and more and releasing them for free, but unfortunately this isn't a great business model. I'd love it if you could fund me to make more games like this and release them for free with no ads.
When you become a patron, you're agreeing to give me a small amount of money for each game I make. With your support, I'll aim to create between 6-12 games a year.
What kind of games do you want to make?
Mostly I expect to use PuzzleScript to make puzzle games like these:- Spooky Pumpkin Game
- Sticky Candy Puzzle Saga
- Happy Birthday Hennell: Sokoban Edition 2014
- You're Pulleying My Leg
- BRICK[bricksmash]SMASH
- The Lonely Wizard (with Terry Cavanagh)
- Shit Snake
- Shit Snake 2: Shit Harder
- Traal (with Jonathan Whiting)
With music from...
I want to collaborate with different musicians, with a particular focus on people who aren't white cis men. Not that there's anything wrong with white cis men, but when a disproportionate number of notable game musicians that I'm aware of fit that bill, then maybe it's time to start signal-boosting all the other people making beautiful game music. They'll get 20% of the money for the month. It won't always be practical to work with a musician but I'd like to do it as much as possible. The people who have initially agreed to be involved are:
Paying it forward
I'm not the only person making games who's asking for money and I'm definitely not the most deserving. I believe that if I'm somehow able to make a small amount of money from this, I should use that position to help others. With this in mind, I will set aside at least 10% of the funds from this campaign to supporting game developers and game critics on Patreon.
Additionally, any month that I use PuzzleScript, I will send Stephen Lavelle 10% to thank him for the hard work he has put into this amazing tool.
Another way I can help out is to highlight some of the less successful [arbitrarily defined as under $500/month] Patreon campaigns that you may wish to contribute to instead of my own:
